Great tanking experience in SM last nightFollow

(get ready for a long story)

Just turned lvl 39 recently with my full prot spec paladin, still learning the ins and outs of the tanking class.

Anyway, after a couple WSG runs with my guild last night (in which the guildies actually played well while the other alliance children just ran around (sigh)), we decided to run SM Cathedral so I could get Aegis of the Scarlet Commander, which I've been pining after for the past week. My shield was way overdue for replacement (Resplendant Guardian) and I was running with 39% mitigation with Retribution aura on (ouch).

Our party was me (39), 39 shammy and priest, 36 mage, and 43 hunter, all guildies. Right away we saw that the hunter was the classic hun-tard. He demanded that his pet could tank, pulled mobs left and right while we were still regaining mana, and further ignored us when we told him to stop it. The priest, who happens to be our guild master, was about to lose it on him in voice chat, and after a couple wipes due to his ineptitude, we eventually kicked him. Of course, he mentioned that he was 13 years old in chat earlier, I'm not surprised.

So...there's now 4 of us, me under-armored, our mage is a bit low for the instance, kinda making it a 3 1/2 man team, and we still decide to see if we can clear the Cathedral, nice and slow.

It's funny that even though we were a man down, we were able to clear mobs quicker and safer than when that ****** was with us. Shammy did the pulling as me getting too close tended to pull more than we wanted to, and I'd taunt his mob, lay down consecrate, and judge SoR to get aggro quickly. A couple times another add would come from the back and beat on our priest, and I'd be able to taunt them over as well.

Bosses went down without a hitch, and my Aegis dropped (WOOHOO!). Mitigation jumped from 39 to 49%, slapped me a thorium spike on that puppy, and I'm pretty sweetly geared now.

The good thing is that several of us got good experience working as a group, and are looking forward to running other 30's guildies through SM in the near future, now that the guild has a solid tank ;) (we're a young guild, so I'm pretty much it for main tank)

The end. :)

Believe me, we gave him plenty of chances and were patient to turn it around. He was THAT bad.

I like this story so I'm going to keep posting it.

I duod SM Cath at lvl 42 (Holy/Ret in Ret gear) with my lvl 32 priest buddy. The whole cathedral too. Anything is possible if you know what you're doing, and honestly 5-man for SM seems more like an obligation than a requirement.

hehe...you're pulling my leg

Nope, true story. We both just really know our classes well, and we actually had to use strategy to win.

grats on the shield

i pull mobs in sm cath with mana tap (BE racial)

2-manning SM cath w/ tankadin & healer is slow but very do-able

good job booting the huntard. don't forget to /spit prior to booting... and whenever you see them... and whenever they post in any chat channel

Yeah Mana tap is sweet for pulling in cath.

I was pulling whole rooms in SM Arm at level 38. You should of read the comments from the rest of my PuG.

SM Arm, just before the last hall:
Me: "ok see ya guys at Herod's door, try to keep up"
Lock: "..soul stone is down"
Priest: "Dear god..."

Edit-put the wrong level down.

I think you're right, I duo'd Cath* as well with a 44 rogue and 42 mage (me).

* ok, fine. Not quite but so close, we were a little too flimsy to get the final boss(es) down

edit - actual levels actually help...

First, it's great to hear a good story in the forms!!!

Grats on your shiled... I used that one for sooooooooo long!!

And the Captian is right. With a group that understands their class and a basic understand of others there is very little that can't be done.

I totally feel you on the hun-tard!!! Glad to hear you kicked him. But I menchon it because it's also points towards the Captian's comment. 3.5 man....
and it went smooth cause you understood your charaters and worked as a group.

Again, gratz on the shield.

Yeah, you look all ready to go!

Be persistant! It's fun to show people how good a prot tank can be!

Well I wasn't prot, I was Holy/Ret in the best Ret gear I could find (I'm very bad about the AH and will upgrade my gear as soon as I find something better, thus making me poor most of the time.)

I was "Tanking" in my ret gear, mostly just trying to kill the things asap, so I was using my 2-hander and my friend was just keeping me alive through it as I tore through the enemies. Only problem was the healers with their renew, but a quick Dispel from my Priest friend solved that problem.

With the bosses at the end, I put on my sword and shield and slowly solod Mograine until he died telling my Priest friend not to heal me until... Whitemane came out and I tanked both of them, focusing on her until her mana ran out from healing herself (I couldn't outdps her heals with my sword and board) while my priest started healing me. I also had to keep dispelling the JotC like debuff that Mograins puts on me, cause that was really starting to hurt when it stacked up. Once she went down I turned towards Mograine and finished him off.

Another fun thing to do when you are 70. Doing the pyramid event as a prot and just running to the bottom where all the trolls are and killing them there. You get a nice mound of enemies at the end.

I don't know if it's exactly the same (if you did or did not do with a full group), but I did something like this when I was a 65 holy-spec with a 35 hunter and a 70 mage. Both the hunter and I almost cried when the mage told me to run to the bottom. As I did, all of the trolls materialized and the mage started blasting. It was all I could do to just keep the aggro with consecration and taunting. Cleared the whole event before my 5-minute buffs wore off (forgot reagents again!).

It was a blast.

Congrats but I find all pre outland instances not as difficult since 2.3 I don’t know :/ if anyone else noticed this, and I have always preferred paladin tanks (most of my friends as well)
But it sounds about right I did sm arm with a similar group in around 30 minutes and wow 37% i have like 47% with ret aura

P.S. You made the right call, I feel the hunter thing on my server we are overpopulated with hunters and most of them are horrid, you made the right call most guilds wont even take them we have so many

Did it solo... sure I was running it for my 35(ish) mage friend, but he died since he was being an idiot so I pretty much solod it.
