Improved Shadow Word PainFollow

I'm a little lost here. I understand that I'm still new to the game and honestly I've spent most of my time researching my pally and learning how to tank. Since 2.3 I've been lvling my Priest like crazy (yes, they made it easier)...

SO my newb questions is....

Improved Shadow Word Pain: WHY?

1236 Shadow damage over 18 seconds = 68 dps

Improved Shadow Word Pain: Rank 2 Increases the duration of your Shadow Word: Pain spell by 6 sec.

1236 Shadow damage over 24 seconds = 51 dps

I don't get why we would do that to ourselves. Someone?

2 extra ticks of damage in that 6 seconds, which means it's not the same amount of damage done as you have listed?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but nowhere do i see it saying it does more damage too.

Even the blizzard site just says it goes longer.

Where do I find out about how much more damage it adds if it does?

I dont think it improves the damage per second of your swp but it does increase the damage per mana, I think.

Not trying to be difficult, just trying to understand the mechanics of this one. Same mana, same damage, longer time to do it...

I still don't get it.
Where is the advantage?

Improved Shadow Word: Pain does not increase the damage done by the spell PER TICK. It does increase the overall damage though, assuming the spell is allowed to run to its 21/24 second completion.

I took this talent while I was leveling, and it proved useful for some of the tougher mobs and farming multiple creatures. When you take it the tooltip on SW:P actually changes; if it originally says 1236 damage over 18 seconds, getting 1 rank in improved and it will say: 1442 damage over 21 seconds, 2 ranks and it will say: 1648 damage over 24 seconds.

I suppose the talent description should clarify on this, saying something along the lines of, "increases duration by 3 seconds and overall damage dealt by SW:P by 13%" or some such.

Of course, it may still be a useless talent - if your fights don't last long enough for it to have benefit. But fighting 2+ creatures at once and it will likely make things slightly easier, and if you're dps in a group then it means you don't have to reapply the DoT as often, saving mana and precious global cooldowns.

The tooltip doesn't update, but SW:P does the same damage per tick with or without Imp. SW:P. Without SW:P the base damage is 1236; with 2/2 Imp. SW:P the new 'base' is 1648. It also gets a proportional increase from your +DMG due to the longer duration.

In essence, the talent is just the ability to cast 33% fewer SW:P's and still keep it up at all times. It doesn't change the DPS of the spell in any way.

Basically the first reply was correct, you get 2 extra ticks. Really.

Since when has anyone actually trusted spell tooltips.

Basically it allows the spell to become a lot more mana friendly. Very nice since you're going to be using that, mind flay, and vamp touch heavily for instancing/raiding.

What RPZip said. Same dmg/tick, same dps, more dmg/cast and more dmg/mana. You just get two ticks tacked onto the end of the spell at the same dmg/tick as you were getting before.

/nod

The reason it doesn't add dps is because dps is damage per second. It's doing the same damage per tick but this skill adds two more ticks to your SW:P. This means for the same cost of mana you're getting two more ticks of damage in. It's just a simple mana efficiency skill for that spell. The tooltip just makes it a little confusing.
