being a pally tank, i always ask to be group leader or assist so i can mark mobs. my question is: is there a general standard for marking rolls? ever since the ability to mark has come out i've used my personal standard. im curious to see how many people use the same method:

Skull = 1st kill/main target(undisputible)
X = 2nd kill/OT
Moon = sheep
Star = sap
Square = trap

then the rest are as needed, but i will usually go with:
Diamond = Warlock CC/Priest CC
Triangle(green panties) = 3rd order kill
Circle(nipple/condom) = whatever is left over or sometimes MT

oh, found examples on wowwiki too :D

It is whatever you set it to be at the beginning of the instance

It's really whatever you, as the leader, want it to be.

The common marks are skull as first kill, x as second, and triangle (3 sides) as third.....

There are also the stop light colors which my new guild uses, to avoid some addons that automatically mark skull on people with bleeds etc. in raids. Triangle as first kill, star as second kill, and x as third kill. AKA green, yellow, red.

Orange or star are commonly sap.

Diamond(purple) is usually hibernate/shackle/banish. Square is usually hunter trap.

Feel free to switch em around though, group make-up's determine the marks usually. As long as your group knows which mark means what.then it doesn't really matter.

Sorry about going off on that :P...but to answer your question, my common way was skull,x,triangle..then star as sap, blue as trap, purple as banish/shackle/hibernate..then moon as sheep and last kill. But since I joined a new raiding guild, I like the first three kills to be green, yellow, red.

This is the macro I use whenever I start tanking an instance:

"Kill order is: Skull, X, Square, and then pick your favorite color and kill it. As for CC, if I need you to I'll let you know. Otherwise, LOLPALLYTANK!"

Haha...well when I run shat halls..I have a macro say ""ok there will be no CC..ever...dont try it...kill order is skull,x,triangle....then just kill whatever you think looks the ugliest...feel free to aoe whenever you want, and good luck beating me in dps""

hehe, I like those macros, may have to use one myself :)

As to the OP, yea it's whatever you want, but most people use what you leaid out there. I personally always use the cross for sap (on the rare occasion I need it, or I am on a DPS alt and marking targets).

On a tangent, does ANYONE else refer to the red X as "cross"? That's what it's labled as in the menu, but no one ever knows what I am talking about >.>

think i'll have to go with those macros. so far only been beaten acouple times and thats by a mage think was a lvl or two higher than me but i was giveing him more than enough mobs to aoe. and the other one was in brd as lvl 50 (the lowest in there at the time) a 59 rogue was kicking my **** in damage. had a 52 lock 56 priest and 56 hunter wich got changed out for a 53 lock due to him logging. at the end i was second highest with rogue double mine i think and everyone else under me. cept that my addon dont include they're pets with them. talking about burning mana trying to keep all the mbos on me with rogue doing what ever and pets taunts on. fun times.

As a follow up question - why do you mark 2nd and 3rd target? I've seen people do it all the time, but don't really understand why. Isn't it easier to just target the tank, and press F (as a DPS)? That way, you always attack the tank's target, and never strike it first. I found it easier that way when I play a DPS alt or off tank with my Pally. So then, I don't have to try clicking on a specific mob in a group of mobs.

Unless it helps tank focus on casters first, or something like that...

Just curious.

Thanks.

as a tank i wont alway stay on the marked targets i make sure i have more than enough threat then i'll toss a wack or two on others and if caster who wont come in aoe range i'll pull out my cpt america moves and wack them with my flying shield. i'm only lvl 50 so i can be little more lax on some stuff. also as you mark second and third it makes the dps focus fire more to take them down faster compared to them spread all over the place by time 2nd or 3rd is dead others are half dead from hitting you.

I'm with Punk on this one. I'm not always targeting the mob that I want to die next, so using marks keeps everyone "in line" and informed as to how I want the fight to go. When the target to die is down to about 35% I'll switch my focus to a different mob (if I've been Consecrating) because by that time I'll have more than enough threat to finish it off, and then kinda bounce around the other mobs making sure I have all their attention. Also use that time if need be/I feel like it to go round up any mobs we actually did CC and don't need or want CCd any more (sap that's ending, trap that could break early, whatever).
