Prot spec lvling questionFollow

#1 Dec 01 2007 at 11:59 AM Rating: Decent
Iv'e heard Prot is the way to be after about 40, as a 55 i'd say i'm pretty overdue however, I always THOUGHT prot and holy lvl'd the slowest so i'm a little confussed as to why prot is pref. to ret.

Could anyone post a sample build of a good prot lvling spec, also what gear should i be focusing on, AP/Stam still or SellDmg, def?

What seals, are used best can you suggest a hit rotaion?

Any help would be awesome ty

~~Sorry for the long message, but take the time to read through it...you'll thank me :)

I leveled from 1 to 70 as prot, and loved it. After 35, yea it does become fast. Having maxxed out Reckoning, Redoubt, and getting Blessing of Sanctuary...you are able to aoe grind. Aoe grinding is what makes prot a super fast leveling spec :).

Ret is nice for single target damage, and maybe even two. But with prot and the minimum talents (level 35 = lowest...which you are a nice chunk past that)...you are able to take between 5 and 10+ mobs at once, and finish in the time you could have killed two or three being ret..AND end up full on mana and health, without ever having to cast a heal.

At 55, which you said you were, I'd go with something near http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=sZV0tIx0zggooVb ...The mandatory talents to get (max) are Redoubt, Imp. Righteous fury, Reckoning, Blessing of Sanctuary, Holy Shield, and Imp. Holy Shield. All of those talents either make you block more, make you take damage when you block, or increase your health/decrease damage taken.

One-Handed Spec. is a nice increase of damage, but possibly not much at 55, but dont forget it is 10 % to every mob on you, if you have 10+ on you that all adds up to a lot of damage. Kings is a nice buff for others if there are two pallys in the group/raid/battleground, and also nice for yourself when tanking, but debatable until you max out your stats ((stam) at 70). Both talents in ret allow faster/lower mana judgements, which is very nice, and I'd recommend.

As for gear focus on stam and int gear because of a lack of spell damage/block rating gear around your level. Once your around 57 you can grab some spell damage plate (___of the sorcerer) off of the AH for pretty cheap..(TBC green drops)..Once past 60 keep your stam up, and get spell damage and block rating. More blocks = more damage done less damage taken...more spell damage = more damage. Don't worry about Attack power gear at all, less you have a few pieces left over. Your weapon will do less and less damage the more spell damage you get. And attack power doesnt effect most of your damage..which is coming from consecration, holy shield, your shield spike, and possibly judgement and seal of righteousness.

Grab a thorium shield spike, or any, from a blacksmith, and put it on your shield.

Most of your damage will be yellow...it will come from consecration, and blocking and having holy shield, blessing of sanctuary, and your shield spike proc. Getting hit soo often also makes redoubt and reckoning shine, and almost never not be up. Reckoning will allow your seal to hit crazily often, doing major damage, healing you frequently, or getting your mana back up for more consecrations.

For this prot aoe-style grinding you want to have a shield with a spike on it, blessing of sanctuary up, holy shield up as often as possible, consecration down when you can, and keep retribution aura up at all times.

If you are taking a lot of damage, judge and refresh light on yourself. Reckoning will make it proc pretty often, healing yourself, while all of your other spells/items/skills hurt the mobs from hitting you.

If you are running out of mana fast, but not taking a huge amount of damage, judge and refresh seal of wisdom. That will keep your mana up for holy shield and consecration.

If you are fine on mana and health, but maybe fighting an elite with 8 of his adds on you, or just not taking a lot of damage/using a lot of mana, judge crusader, and refresh seal of righteousness to hurt the elite/mobs a lot.

Feel free to use a mix of light and wisdom, along with righteousness when you can.

P.S. Use your mount to pull a nice number around 7...maybe more ..depends how hard they hit, and then fight them all on top of eachother, keeping them infront of you (so you can block)...This works best with melee, because you cant keep caster's bunched up, and their spells cant proc many of your main damage skills.

A nice place for you to try this out after you respec is north/east of the FP in western plaguelands...There are groups of melee undead, that are easy to round up, dont hit too hard, and your exorcism is able to hit them for added damage.

Good Luck with your new playstyle :P..hope ya like it :D

Prot, as stated, is great for AE grinding. It's not the best when it comes to single target DPS, and you can really see that in the fights where you only get one or two mobs on you. Where Ret and Shockadins can keep up fairly high single target DPS, Prot Pally's become more dangerous and more potent with more mobs beating on them.

I leveled from 35-60 as a Prot Pally and loved it for the most part(there were some rough points where I had wished I was a ret build, but that happens with every scep along the way). Once I got to 60 I changed to a shockadin build since I just needed a bit of a change(and I don't mind healing if needed) to my normal routine.

very nicely said theblackcasper.

onlything i will add is there is a list of aoe grinding spots in the mages forms think it's stickied or in they're sticky. use that since they dont like casters when they aoe grind as much as we don't it should be pretty good. there was one listed in here dont know if it was added to sticky or not.

also if you dont wanna pay the price of the high end shield spike go with thorium shield spike 20-30 damage compared to 28-38 damage for the high end one. but when you find someone who can make it add them to your friends list it's easier to buy the mats and have them make than buy the spike. at least on my server. but the recipe seems harder to find so make sure to have them on friends. took me 4 days to find someone to make me one one time.

I'd go with a build like this, with additional points in Combat Expertise.

Hmm...follow Gild's build if you want to heal...but as prot I barely ever healed. Not saying I dont like healing, but never had the need to. My problem was mainly mana..and healing costs even more mana than constantly judgeing-resealing, consecration, and keeping holy shield up. Judgement and seal of light kept me healed fine. Also when you are casting, you cannot block, so heals arn't that nice when aoe grinding.

If he was to cast heals, when fighting somewhere near 10 mobs...he would have to take retribution aura off...switching to concentration...to add in with the holy talent Gild picked up...to not lose casting time...because 10 + mobs hitting you means its gonna be hard to get heals off. So not only would he be taking a lot of damage from not blocking/parrying....he would also not be doing much damage, from holy shield, blessing of sanctuary...shield spike..and probably retribution aura.

I do like the added mana from the first holy talent though, but the lower mana judgements, in my opinion, are a lot better than being able to cast heals.

Lets not forget that the 20 defense points also make you take less damage, and block a bit more.

Precision is also nice when having that many spells and proc's go off.

I'd suggest playing with builds a bit....find one you like...if you like healing, and taking more damage, and doing less...go for it :P..but the seal of light and judgement of light should be fine. If you find you always need mana, maybe grab those first 5 in holy, but seal and judgement of wisdom should take care of that. If its just too slow, maybe spec into retribution in a few levels and go up to imp. retribution aura...and possibly crusade... The 15% runspeed talent, helps a lot when pulling many mobs...and helps fighting those hard to fight casters.....Just make sure to keep the "base" aoe grinding talents I listed when playing with builds.

As a side not, at 70..with these techniques, and a few nice items...(heal when you block trinket from shat. halls...and shield from sporegar with a felsteel shield spike on it)...I can pull SM cath in one pull...And I mean, run around and grab every mob on the bottom level...go up the stairs..grab everything on second level..and then go through the door which I snuck through and opened before I started, and attack the boss, having everything in there aggro me. I then go in a room....pop my trinket..and block damage them to death, with the help of consecration (which does the most damage, by far). And there I still always seem to be outta mana, close to full health, and end up killing the last three mobs over like a two minute period..having killed all of the others in less than two :P. I can do a full clear of that place in under 5 minutes, and usually just loot the blues from the bosses and d/e them, making a nice 20g per 5 minutes selling small radiant shards on the AH.

Yeah, that build provides arguably the most role flexibility when leveling. You can main tank, main heal, and AoE grind, each with great success and only low to moderate difficulty in the off-spec role (in this case healing).
