trouble in BGFollow

Die, die, die: That's how it went with me last night in WSG. Is this typical? I'm a 48 spriest with mostly blues, but was healing last night (love to BG heal), and just could not stay alive. Part of it was definitely that no one was keeping an eye on me, but part of it was just lousy escape/defense skills, I think. PW:S and psychic scream just weren't cutting the mustard. Do things get better at higher levels? Do they level out? It must be better to some degree just because (one would think) folks at level 70 will be better at watching their healers than they are at level 48. (I still topped the charts every time, with more than 2x the healing of the next highest person.)

And--a related question--how do you high-level priests like arenas? I'm guessing that with investment in the disc tree things will be better.

with me it all depends on your tricks as i call them,i.e despret prayer my gnomish chicken fear sheild and random trinkets.some classes wipe us fast, whats your spec'd

Go shadow spec, if you want to level, then when you are a higher level, you can respec back to just healing. It's hard to level as a straight healer, so just go shadow, until you feel comfortable being straight holy. For BG's I would suggest telling your 5 man group to keep an eye on you, and show them that your valuable by healing them, most people don't realize who is healing them, they just know they're getting healed, but if you tell a specific person that you will have their back with heals, they will look out for you more.

Being a priest in arena sucks until you get geared for it, then you become pretty damn hard to kill.

For the arena question - shadow priests are harder than most other classes to play, but can be extremely powerful. Best 2v2 partner is rogue followed by warlock, provided they're well-played as well. In 3v3, a DoT-heavy group can tear through the opposing team like crazy. UA lock, shadow priest, and doomkin can stack a grand total of 15 debuffs on a target in a matter of seconds, and still have enough burst to take off a huge portion of someone's health in a matter of one or two GCD's. In 5v5's, shadow priests are the debuffers and mana pools of a group, making sure the healer's mana stays up.

Shadow priests are often targetted first in any PvP, and who can blame them? We've got 8 debuffs that will overwhelm any dispeller, offensive and defensive dispels, shields, and we can switch out to heal. Once you get better gear, you eventually get used to it - and if nothing else, you're the distraction while the flag carrier gets away or your rogue partner chews through a caster.

Try to start the battle with your team between you and the enemy. Then when the enemy discovers you healing, run towards your team (toggle on the mini map to see your team). You have a bunch of tools to keep alive, and really all you need to do is delay your own death long enough for your team to get the heat off of you. Save your mana for healing in those situation, and use your scream to escape as well.

Also, it doesn't hurt to load up on +stamina gear (in the 49 bracket, I'd expect you to need at least 2000+ health to survive) and get a healing mod if you don't have one already.

Oh, one more thing, get some anti-venom to cleanse the crippling poison, that might help you run away from rogues. Also, potions of curing are great because they don't share the cooldown with your anti-venoms.

I think things get much better at higher levels. I went into a heavy disc build 43/18/0 which helps greatly for survival. I have a few pieces of the vindicators set and am waiting for the vengeful helm. I am considered way undergeared. So a little deeper in the disc build helps a bunch. A LOT LESS dying!
you said "Part of it was definitely that no one was keeping an eye on me", technically no one is watching out for you. You are watching out for them, so to say. Healers have to heal others and heal yourself, yes a very stressful job, but a fun one once you get the hang of it.
"folks at level 70 will be better at watching their healers" and yes, you will still be the target at all levels, but most warriors/rogues/hunters will try to slow them down so you can get away and heal, but its still mainly gonna be your job to do.
"And--a related question--how do you high-level priests like arenas? I'm guessing that with investment in the disc tree things will be better"- I love it, its fun. Mana burn/heal/mana burn/heal. haha its part of the job. A disc build is good for the undergeared but the 28/33 is still gonna be good with gear in 5v5. Hope that helped and hope i didnt just ramble lol. good luck and happy heals
