I was talking with some guildies a few hours ago regarding this subject. I was really happy for having gathered the clefthoof set. Bought some blue and yellow gems, with sta, def rating and +hit, when this rogue tells me that I bought the gems in vain, wasting them on this set.

Money is no problem at lvl 70. But his point was that I could get better tanking items from Arena.

I thought Arena items are good for PVP, and PVE items for...PVE. According to him, this ins't true anymore.
So, are indeed arena items better for tanking?

I am definitely not the expert on the subject, but most people I talk to seem to say that the Clefthoof set is the better tanking gear until upgrades you can get from other PVE raids.

Would have to see what pieces you are referring to, but I have been researching a lot of the gear upgrades because I am at that stage also, and it seems that Clefthoof wins out over most of the alternatives.

Well, this is how it is...
Blizz had the brilliant idea of introducing easy-to-get epics. They get more and more epic every few months... But older gear isn't updated.

So as of Season 3, it's hard to see why you'd use Heavy Clefthoof over Vengeful Gladiator. (I haven't checked all pieces, just the chest piece)

If you take a look at the chest pieces only:

HC Armor: 500
VG Armor: 529

HC Stam: 45
VG Stam: 54

HC Def Rating: 24 -> About 10 Def Skill, which amounts to about a 0.4% chance not to be crit'd.
VG Resil: 26 -> About 0.66% chance not to be crit'd.

Both have 3 sockets, though admittedly off the top of my head I can't tell if the colors make much of a difference for a tanking Druid. Also, the socket bonus of 4 Dodge Rating is easily overthrown by the massive stats on VG. (Str, Agi, Int thrown in for good measure) You also get Hit Rating which is always nice, and Crit Rating to help with threat and rage generation. And some armor ignoring... which I really don't know what it amounts to.

Now, with all that being said, Clefthoof is definitely a cheaper alternative and it is easier to get as you don't even have to be LW yourself, while the VG will require a few weeks of Arena.

Also, that is only for the S3 gear. The gap between Clefthoof and S2 is smaller, and S1 is somewhat similar but I'd say inferior to Clefthoof.

So basically stick with Clefthoof until you can get S3, in my opinion. If you don't like/want to Arena, just stick with the PvE upgrades. Keep in mind, however, that the Clefthoof is only 3 pieces and for the other pieces, Arena gear is often a nice alternative.

I would start with the Heavy Clefthoof set as that definitely does the job for Karazhan. Spend your arena points on the Merciless Gladiators Maul (or S3 weapon if you can get the rating) as it is a massive upgrade on any other DPS weapon you are likely to get.

Once you have that, then you can start on the other arena gear - it is definitely a nice upgrade for tanking.

I've been using heavy clefthoof right up to gruul and a little venture into the eye. only replaced the boots so far, with Boots of Natural Grace (lucky pattern drop). Still waiting from Gruul drops and DKP to coincide for my legs.

I imagine if you have the time to be running around in arena long enough to get the pvp set then go for it, but if you'd rather be raiding you can probably farm/buy up the mats for the whole clefthoof set in a couple of days at most.

I would never say putting good quality gems into it is a bad thing, cos unless you happen to get the legs/chest from your T4 very soon you will be using this set for tanking for a long time.

Just depends on your priorites. Do you want to raid or pvp?

Also, don't forget the new Badge rewards :

Vestements of Hibernation
Footwraps of Wild Encroachment
Waistguard of the Greatbeast or Tree-menders Belt from Heroic Ramparts
Band of the Swift Paw

Some of these may not have the sockets of the clefthoof or pvp set, but they are readily available and great items for tanking.
