Changing Pet and Training PointsFollow

#1 Nov 30 2007 at 1:05 PM Rating: Decent
Hi,

Is it a bad idea to change pet too often? I've had the same one from the begining so it's built up a fair few training points. If I take a new one will it take a long time to get enough points to take the higher rank abilities etc. How many times have you all changed? I'm level 20 now. Thanks

It's technically not a "bad" thing to change pets occasionally but it can definitely become time consuming if done often. It's probably better to not get into the habit of replacing your pet, unless there's a rare beastie that you feel you just have to get, which you were too low level for earlier. It pays to visit Petopia [linked below] and plan ahead.

I haven't timed exactly how long training points take to gather up but the time required just gets longer as you train higher level pets. I've had about six or seven different pets over the course of one of my hunters. But they were mostly had during the lower levels, to experiment with the feel of playing with different species.

If you're interested in trying out the kind of wait you might be in for, stable your current pet, train something new and run around doing your quests, feeding the new pet as it needs it. Then you'll see how long fresh training points take at level 20 and can remember that it gets gradually slower from then on.

Hi, thanks for the answer, very helpful. I suppose it leads me to another couple of questions that maybe you can help me with, i.e. 1) If you keep your first pet all the way to 70 would it acumulate more training points than a new pet trained later on (say 40) would have at 70, and 2) regardless of training points used and all the skills taught (bite, claw rank-X etc) - I mean these things being even - will a pet brought up from lvl 10 be equally as strong as a pet trained from a higher level? Thanks

1. Training points are decided by your pet's lvl, so the kitty you got at lvl 10 will have the same number of training points as the pet you get at lvl 62 when both are lvl 70 (assuming they have the same loyalty level).

2. The same goes for the strength of pets at these levels, assuming they are the same species there should be no difference at all in the strength of your pet when they are the same level (different species of pets will have different stat modifiers, like a turtle having a high defense and dealing low damage where a raptor deals high damage and has low health)

A lot of these questions can be answered in the "Every question Answered Here" Sticky at the top of the page, It has a nice section on pets.

Keep in mind any pet you tame will take longer to gain levels of loyalty if that pet is the same level as you when you tame it (i.e. you're level 20 and you tame a level 20 pet). Not sure why, has something to do with it earning exp, and when it's the same level as you it doesn't earn exp until you ding your next level.

I don't think this is the case. I've never noticed pets not gaining loyalty when the same level as you.

Really? I've had it happen more than once, most notably that I can remember my current cat. I acquired him when I was 60, and he was also 60, and I think he only made it to lv 2 loyalty by the time I had dinged 61. Hadn't ever seen that before. I could be wrong of course, but it just seemed that there was some dependency on EXP for a pet to gain faster loyalty.

Well,if you were both 60 and he made it to loyalty two before you dinged 61 then pet xp can't be a factor. ;) From everything I've seen there is a requirement based on the amount of xp it would take for you to level though, so as you get higher in level it takes longer for your pet to go up in loyalty. That might explain what you experienced.

Regardless, run a few instances and your pet should move along quickly. I'm building up an owl like that currently. Decided to use those other two stable slots that have sat almost completely unused for most of my leveling career for something.
