Quick question.

I just tamed the ghost saber and was gonna level him up, but he isnt getting any exp.

I have killed dragons in winterspring and lev 21 zevara in the barrens, no luck either way.

his loyalty hasn't leveled up from level 1 yet, could that be why?

If you're not getting XP for the kills, neither is he. Be prepared to run many an instance or learn to kite really well.

I've been doing the same thing last few weeks with my boar and it's a slow process.

You have to be getting XP for your pet to get XP unfortunately :(

Choose some rep-gaining mobs or some worthwhile mats to farm and kill the lowest lvl mobs in your xp range (lvl 62 mobs for 70?) as you'll be doing a lot of kiting and melee for a long, long time :(

My hunter is now 64 and pet is 57 so there's an end in site eventually but it's slooooww ;) certainly increases your kiting skills though ;)

Firewing Point in Terokkar has a lot of casters so you don't have to kite as much, and I believe that they're level 62, so you can still get exp off of them.

I did the same thing with my troll. I had a Ghost Saber until 57 (at which point I tamed the constantly-yawning Rakshiri that drove me nuts all the way up to 70 raids).

I'd had enough of that cat and ditched it for another Ghost Saber... Luckily, I had a few close friends in my guild that offered to help me with the grind now and then.

If you're geared well enough (or the proper spec), just take your pet into instances. Be SURE to make certain that your party doesn't mind you having an underleveled pet. Because of my gear, I'm able to get away with being BM and leveling up lowbie pets in pick-up instances (still top DPS in most cases XD). Exp goes by really fast that way, and it's not nearly as dull.

If you grind with a guildie, be aware that your pet also receives the exp decrease for being grouped.

If you don't have the luxury of having cool guildies (or being epixed for instancing with a lowbie pet), I found that the Ogres at Laughing Skull in Nagrand are really easy to grind. For some reason they seem to have lower HP than most mobs in that zone, and you can work on getting rep for two factions at the same time (Consort/Faction Base as well as Powder for Halaa).

You have my condolences. I picked up the ghost saber when my hunter was in the 40s and it wasn't until I hit 70 that he finally caught up to me. I'd kite and chain trap grind mobs until I could stand it no longer. Put him away for a few levels and do it over again. I'm leveling a Rotting Angamar now. I like the armored blue boar skin best. He's only in his 40s. <sigh>

Mobs must be 'green' or higher to the hunter in order for the pet to gain experience. 'Grey' mobs will not give experience to your pet.

it would be cool if there was a "Train Pet" skill. that doubled its exp but it could only watch or some other significant debuff.

or let them get rested Exp. as a Hunter alt. i find im perma rested, and its damn near impossible to keep 2 pets up to my lvl.
