Lost on lightning overloadFollow

#27 Dec 18 2007 at 5:18 PM Rating: Decent
i tried it today but as someone said lightning overload on the
combat log says lightning bolt so i didnt screenshot any as it
could easily be said that LO didnt go off with it just saying
lightning bolt, only thing i can do is take a screenshot of
the rank 10 LO going off and the rank 11 and take my word for
it. which doesnt solve the problem of giving sufficient proof.
any ideas of how to screenshot the LO going off? (guess i may
have to video it and upload it somewhere)

I just tried it on the PTR, and the bug is there.

Gaudion, specifically, and only, Lightning Bolt Rank 10 is bugged to give you a same-damage LB as the normal cast.
Moreover, someone here was correct in saying that the real LB cast is scaled more appropriately with +spell damage.

With Resto gear on (about +550 spell damage) and spec'd 41/0/20, I did Dr. Boom testing. When using Rank 12 LB, it always did half damage when it proc'd. When using Rank 11 LB, it always did half damage. When using Rank 10, it always did about 2/3s damage.

I looked at that, and made me wonder, "Maybe it's critting?"
But then with the Elemental tree talent that makes spell damage do 200% crits instead of 150%, that wasn't it. So I went into enhancement gear with almost no spell damage (I was partied with a mage and had Wrath of Air down), and the numbers were very very very similar, not even 70 damage apart generally.

Rank 10 Lightning Bolt is bugged with Lightning Overload, I'm absolutely positive. I've seen the LO crit, and it's different from Rank 10 LB+LO.

So, you may never have seen this phenomenon casting Rank 12 LB. But if you strip down naked, cast Rank 10 LBs on Dr. Boom, you'll find yourself doing double damage on LB+LO instead of 150% more damage.

I've had the same results as Synza now that I have rank 11 LB. Tried it out and the bug is definitely there at level 10 LB.

Can't LO crit?

What if you are not critting on the reg lightning bolt, then critting on the LO. That might explain it.

Your screen will show different, though.

Let's say you cast Lightning Bolt at the target.
Yellow numbers will scroll upwards and fade out quickly, generally.
If you crit, however, then the number is in larger text and stays there, stationary.

Let's get rid of +spell damage.

If LB and LO were to work as intended, in the scenario where your normal Lightning Bolt hits and your Lightning Overload crits, you will have 937 damage scrolling upwards and fading out and another 932 damage in larger size stationary. The former is the LB, the latter is the LO.

What I'm seeing is: With the LB Rank 10 bug, when LO procs and both are normal hits, they are both smaller yellow numbers floating upwards at 937 and 932 (just made up numbers).

Thus, you can visually tell the difference.

You're 70, are you not? It sounds like what is happening is that the -spell damage penalty is being correctly applied to LB but not the corresponding LO when you downrank it. (We're all aware of the downrank -spell damage effect, right?) I will test this out later myself.

However, I highly doubt most, if any of the previous reporters of this bug, were downranking. Feel free to correct me on that if I'm wrong. I know some weren't even 70.

It's possible that this is a bug that applies exclusively to Rank 10 LB outside of the downranking issue, but I still think the majority of what is happening here is that people are losing track of which cast is the LB and which is the LO since they are both recorded on your combat log as LB's.

I'm going to run some tests with my LB downranked later to see if I can replicate this effect. Further posts pending until then.

No, no, those screenshots were fine. Like I said, I am going to play around with Rank 10 and see if I can't replicate it before I post more.

I will trust you on this, but I have not experienced it myself. With the past weekend of 50k honor pvping, I threw a lot of lightning bolts, including several thousand LOs and TLC's extras tossed in. My mods have a very distinct difference in the hits versus crits, and while I did not notice either of them going off with the same damage numbers, I was able to tell exactly which ones were crits and which weren't by the sizable difference and lack of +'s on either side of the damage flashing up.

It could indeed be a 'problem' with the damage coefficient calculations and the guess that below rank 10 you will not have significant amounts of spell damage gear. Since you get rank 10 at 56, this stands to reason that if anything, this is due to something along those lines. I hope for your sake this is something that can be kept on this site and reveled in for as long as possible.

Hell, with the downranking no longer needed because of the mana/5 buffs, I may have missed this completely. I'll go grind on some clefthoofs with rank 10 and see if I can't get this freakish thing happen for me too...

Enjoy it!
