With Arena S1 gear being available to purchase via honour points as of the 27th, is it a terrible idea to pick up either the 1h sword or axe to use as my tanking weapon?
I'm currently using the crystalling kopesh from the quest in Nagrand...and can only think that the extra 30 dps from that Arena 1h'der will be a huge improvement for tanking?
Am I wrong? Flame on please !

wouldn't be a terrible idea at all imo. your personal dps, tps and rage generation would most likely increase (though either s1 weapon is slightly slower than the crystalline kopesh). if you can cover the missing +defense then give it a shot.
Only problem I can see is that the Gladiator weapons are quite a bit slower. Some may even say it's too slow.
That being said, I tanked Mana Tombs Heroic with my Planar Edge (2.7 speed), and was even above one of the DPS classes (Shammy I think) on the damage meter ;-)
It wasn't supremely easy ... HS spams aren't quite "Spams" at 2.7 secs per swing .. but Rage and Agro was quite ok. I wouldn't make a habit of tanking with it though .. would rather use my 1.5 sec dagger to tank with (and have actually, quite successfully, on a number of occassions).
The faster gladiator weapons would be excellent ... BUT ... they're off hand only :-(

Fast tanking weapon has advantage of better rage flow and faster HS spam while slow gains considerably with Devastate spam.
In my opinion that weapon would be a hudge improvement in all but survivability so unless you strugle at defence - go for it.

I've been using the Vindicator's Brand for every level 70 instance and I love it. Just over 81 DPS on a 2.6 speed weapon. I can't imagine the difference the arena weapon would make with a transition from the kopesh 60 DPS -> 91 DPS.
