doing this correctly?Follow

Ok im in my 30s now and affliction. When i run instances, I find myself being the lowest dps (cept the healer). Is this to be expected or am i doing something wrong?

I normally dot (corruption, Curse, SL) then either wand (low mana) or shadow bolt. The guys go down really fast, so fast that my dots dont really expire, so i thought about just shadow bolting. When i tried it out, our group took down 3 guys, with me getting 2 shadow bolts in. I think maybe next time, just wand everything til we reach the bosses?

Thanks.

If you're wanding you'll always be down the bottom.

On trash, try Corr, then SB and leave it at that. On bosses, all DoTs, SB, renew DoTs, SB. Life Tap / Dark Pact when required.

Don't worry about damage against trash. There is absolutely no way to get your dots to complete before they go down. Warlocks shine in boss encounters, where you can use everything in your ******* and still end up with full mana afterwards.

You complain about having low mana after only three dots? Are you using Life Tap/Drain Life at all?

In your 30s running instances you can try alot of stuff to boost your DPS.

First of all, what Demon are you using? If you're using Succy/Fel keep them on attack for regular damage, but turn off their spells (especially Succy) to keep mana up in case you need to use there abilities. Using a VW is a surefire way to put you low on the damage end in that reguard -- EXCEPT if you're using him to OT stuff.

Your VW can tank better than most real tanks out there -- the main problem is control and agro generation, this is why VWs don't tank everything at this level. If you do have a VW out, though, use him to tank some adds and throw DoTs on those monsters -- having 3 more monsters to DoT will mean 3 times (if not more) the damage.

In the 30s, Drain Life is actually better DPS than Shadowbolt. It's nice because it works out that you can Lifetap for mana and then get your life back through this very spell. On very easy monsters (non-elites) I'd just throw a Corruption, unless they're not getting hit in which case I'd throw Agony too.

For Melee-heavy groups that are tearing through dungeons, I find that Wreckless is a better choice than any other curse at this level, and if the tanks complain about the damage intake increasing or theres too many monsters that it's eating up mana, use Rank 1. Either way it will allow the melees to push out MUCH more damage, as well as keep the monsters from fleeing.

I think the main problem here is you arn't fighting stuff that is hard enough yet. Affliction pumps out ALOT of damage, you just need some time to do it and it'll balance out with other DPS classes. Once you get into RFD and Cathedral ect you'll probobly be noticing you're doing alot more for the group.

Remember too, Lock is far more than just some damage. Take a look through all your skills again and you'll see all the amazing control/cc spells you have.

no.. i mean, if im low mana, then i wand. I'm still learning to um, balance the life tapping when im in combat. Ive gotten used to using my mana til its gone, then life tapping to low health to full only after im not in combat. I am good with keeping an eye on my health and using drain life.. just have to remember about mana as well.

Im not much of a gamer (ha, i think i finally managed to incorporate tabbing.. next up: shift+tab), so when i play i get panicky sometimes:-). (gah, i guess being on a pvp server isnt helping..)

I dont know how/when to use the succubus yet, so instead I have my imp out for the fire bolts and blood pact. I dont have fel hunter because I havent finished that quest yet.

Yah I did parts of the scarlet monastery, and I was using curse of recklessness on all the guys. It didnt occur to me to use rank 1 (not sure what rank i have now..) that is such a good idea!! Thanks! (actually, up until i did that dungeon quest, I didnt understand how warlocks could cc..but I guess Im beginning to understand it a bit better now)

Yah :D i guess im such a newb, but I am really liking my warlock! and once my finals are over, i'll definetly experiment more with my spells and pets! Chain drain tanking looks so crazy, i cant wait to try it in action.

until later on in game (which i am not there yet) Affliclocks will mostlikely be lower on the damage meters, simply because your dots do not have time to tick out their full duration, dont worry about it too much, at 40 i am cositently 3-4th on the dps, just ahead of the healer, and sometimes ahead of a melee dps class. From what i have seen, once you get closer to endgame and the longer drawn out boss monsters, Afflic dps really shines, wit hthe dots ticking thewir full duration, and spam SB's rackign up the rest of the damage. So for now i would suggesat to just keep doign what you are doing, possibly picking up some +shadow damage gear as long as you are not sacrificing too much stamina, the + dmg will help your dps a bit.

to sum it up, yes your are doign it right, afflic dps doesnt shien until long drawn out fights.

try this: instead of shadowbolt/wand after you toss your dots, hit Life Tap once, and then switch to Drain Life. You'll find that you have less downtime, and hardly ever have to worry about mana.
