ok, i heard that ret pally's are good for questing on your own, but nobody likes them at endgame or even high level instances. But i still want to tank so i might have to respec to prot. first of all is that true? and second when should i respec? (im at 42 now)

Nobody liked them, 2.3 changed things a bit but they are still a bit on the outs. I would recommend switching to prot around 60 or so, that's when you really need the tanking talents in order to effectively tank those instances.
