Spell DamageFollow

I am curious about potential spell damage for mages. I am a lvl 48 fire spec 0/39/0 mage and I tend to see Pyroblast crits in the area of 1050 and fireball crits in the area of 900 give or take. Today in AB I was clobbered by a mage who hit me for 1255 with a fireball and followed it up with two arcane missiles for 490 each. Even with damage gear this does not seem plausible? Can someone help me with what I am missing?

If he was arcane specc it would explain some of it + berzerker buff...

They could have used AP (Arcane Power) and a trinket, then presence of mind fireballed followed by arcane missiles.

I obviously ask this out of complete ignorance but the base damage for fireball is 505 and arcane missiles is 151. A trinket and arcane power can triple the damage?

well if he had some +dmg gear on, AP adds 30% more damage, so factor in a critical hit then it is very possible.

Don't forget to factor in the talent Spell Power, which would make a fireball that hits for 505 crit for 883(1148 with AP). A 151 arcane missile would become a 264 crit(343 crit with AP). With a bit of spell damage, it would easily be doable. But we can't forget to add in that a level 49 mage could have 25% of his Int converted to mana, which makes the spell damage easy to get.

It would take about 45-50 spell damage to get a fireball crit up there with those talents. I can't remember the AM coefficient, so I'm not gonna do the math on that one(feeling too lazy to go to WoWWiki).

Both Emp arcane missiles and Mind Mastery need 35+ points in arcane tree.A lvl 49 can't have both of them.Even Arcane mind would be 20% or maybe less depending on his selection plus how much int a lvl 49 can have?.Unless he was a twink with a Sunfire enchant and/or bracer-gloves spell dmg enchant he can't have that high dmg on AM.it's +50 from sunfire +30 bracers and +35 gloves.maybe with a berzerker buff from bg (+20%) and an AP(+30%) but then again he could have crited for more..:/
Anyway he must have some kind of end game enchants on him to get these crits.

EDIT: Btw i believe AM gets 142,86% coeficient but divided in the 5 hits of the spell.emp AM gets 45% from your bonus dmg and it goes to ~187,86%.
I found the values on wowwiki so don't blame me :P

Never said he had Emp Arcane Missiles. But your coefficient numbers seem right, so let's math that out. Real simple math where I ignore all other damage increases suggests that with AP and Spell Power, the damage required would be about 200-225 to put the AM number in the ballpark of where it needs to be on a crit. Assuming Mind Mastery, I'd be willing to bet that you'd only need 150 or so to get the required number. With the three mentioned enchants(btw, it's 15 on bracers and 20 on gloves 30 and 35 are the healing enchants), that's 85, which leaves about 65 to go, which is easily within reach for gear.

And +200 spell damage at level 49 is not that hard to get. My shadow priest (granted it was a pvp twinkie) at level 39 had +215 spell damage. Anybody over level 35 has access to endgame enchants, which allows for two things:

1) enchanting spell damage, like +40 spell damage on staff, +20 on gloves. A mystic spell thread leg armor kit for 25 spell damage (and +16 sta) = 85 spell damage)

2) enchants a couple of pieces of gear with stats like +12 int on gloves and +sta on feet (+8 kits are quite cheap), +6 to all stats on chest) etc, allowing for some pieces of gear to sacrifice stats for spell damage without gimping the int / sta stats to bad. That way for instance shoulders with >20 spell damage are easy to get.

Add in a good staff with around +20 spell damage, dreamweave set= +18 on the gloves +21 on the circlet and +18 on the vest = +77 spell damage.

and neck with +spell damage. Gem studded band = +16, advisor ring = +12 spell damage. Cloaks with stats and spell damage range in the +12-18 spell damage. get the AB belt for either +14 spell damage or +crit rate and +9 spell damage. The stats on a spellshock leggings are +23 spell damage.

Add it all up and around level 49 between +200-300 spell damage is perfectly feasible even with some greens and crafted items from tailoring.
