Ranged Wep SpeedFollow

#1 Nov 25 2007 at 9:10 AM Rating: Decent
My friend and I are having an argument over weapon speeds on bows/guns/crossbows. Basically he says that as a BM spec'd hunter you'd want a slower bow to hit harder with but if you were survival(which he is thinking about going) you'd want a faster bow. I disagree with him on the grounds that a slower ranged wep has more top end and would hit harder so that would be better. So the question comes out to be: is a faster or slower wep better for a hunter, and as which specs would the answer be true for?

BM hunters prefer bows at around 2.6/2.7 speed optimally, for much steady/auto spamming. Marks hunters like bows a little slower to make up for the different shots that they weave in. I have little experience as a survival hunter, so you'll have to wait for someone else to respond.

Of course for PvP I'd wager that a slower weapon is best no matter what spec you are.

I would agree that a slower weapon would be optimal for pvp, mostly due to the fact that often times you aren't able to stand in one spot and steady, auto-shot spam like in a raid. Mobility will be your key and getting in your few HARD hitting shots. For an SV hunter I would also agree that getting faster weapon would be better perhaps? Mostly because of the insanely high crit rate SV hunters can manage. More shots = more crits. However, the current highest raid dps hunters are BM and alternate steady with auto-shots. Finding a weapon that allows you to alternate these in a timely manner will optimize your dps. 2.6 to 2.7 sounds about right for this.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but weapon speeds were normalized a while back, so if you have a weapon that does 66.4DPS and has an attack speed of 2.2, and a weapon that does 66.4DPS with an attack speed of 2.8, They will do the same amount of damage in the long run.

So, personally, I'd rather have a bow with 2.6-2.8 attack speed for any spec to easily weave in steady shots, and still have time for Kill Command when it pops. Plus, arrows get expensive when you start to think about raiding (you're slacking if you don't have arrows that are better than blackflights). Faster Bows mean more arrows, more arrows mean more trips to the special vendor and more money.

You're completely wrong; that's not what normalization is.

You're right in that a 66 DPS bow will technically do the same amount of damage as a faster 66 DPS bow, but you're wrong from the perspective that crits are going to make the slower bow fare better in DPS because of instant shots.

Pardon me if I sound like a newb for asking this, but would anyone favor bows/guns with faster speeds (not for pulling) that are, say, under 2.0?

if you have no lag and react instantly (with a 15% quiver) your optimal weapon speed to weave in steady shots is 1.5 / 0.85 = 1.77 seconds... However, even if your reactions are very quick and your lag is minimal, it's safe to assume you will need at least 0.5 seconds over that = 2.27 seconds. If you'd rather just use multi's and arcane's, then get the best lookin bow you can find.
Also, if you have serpent's swiftness (BM talent) then your attack speed is cut by another 20%... Can anyone verify that the quiver and talents attack speed boosts dont cut down on SS casting speed? I thought Rapid Fire did make casting speed faster, but now i can't remember.

Anyways, 2.00 is really fast and can easily cause lots of problems. I would avoid them unless it can top other bows' dps that easily

Rapid fire does indeed make your casting time shots go faster. Right now I have a 2.8 speed xbow. Combined with BM talents and a quiver, my attack speed is 2.03. I find this is a great speed to be at for weaving in steady shots. It allows for a little bit of lag and slightly slow reactions. I think anything faster would jack up my rotation.
