OK, well..yesterday my guild did their first Gruuls run after being formed only two weeks ago, and having two groups clear kara twice now.

Our maintank who is post kara geared, was tanking Maulgar, and kept dieing in the initial pull. I was checking my combat log, and it had looked like "(c) 8000"....Not sure if that is a crit, or a crushing blow. Seems like too low to be a crushing blow on a war with 16k armor. but possibly, dont know much about crushing blows, but I armory'd him and he is past 510 defense, and well past uncrushable (with the warrior shield skill up, of couse).

So was it that he wasnt putting that skill up?...or as one of the people in our guild said, does having 490 defense put yourself as far as you can towards being uncritable, but there is always gonna be a chance?...or possibly, does having 102.4 + avoidance still leave room to be crushed, that you can't knock it off the table 100%.

I was under the impression that 490 meant, no melee crits, ever, and that 102.4 avoidance meant all blocked, dodge, parry, or missed. No room for crits or crushes but am wondering If the guildie was right after armory'ing the warrior.

Thanks in advance for and responses.

490 Defense = no crits, at all. 102.4% avoidance means no crushing blows, ever. EXCEPTIONS are when Shield Block (in his case) or Holy Shield is not active, or you are in a position where you cannot block or parry.

Ty Maul :)

Thats what I always had thought, but was told that it was wrong by actually two different people...SO I guess the tank wasnt keeping shield block up, thanks for the answer :).

Not necessarily true. Shield Block, even when improved, will only let you be uncrushable if you are hit by 2 or fewer attacks in a 5 second time span. If a boss parries your tank (or any melee dps dumb enough to be attacking from the front) you're looking at a definite possibility of your tank getting crushed.

Crushing blows can and will happen in just about every boss fight. A single crushing blow should never be enough to finish off your tank, though.

I dunno if his healers weren't on the ball keeping him topped off then a crushing blow could have killed him. Pre-Gruuls for example maiden regularly pulls crushing blows for like 5-8k damage.. If he has less than half his health, it coulda caught him. Gotta spam those defense abilities!

The (c) you are seeing refers to a crushing blow.

My thought is that when the pull is occurring, this tank is running Maulgar to the back wall with his back turned to Maulgar.
If you have your back turned to a boss, you cannot block or parry (might be able to dodge, can't remember).

Regardless, a tank should never turn his back to a raid boss unless it is 110% necessary to do so.

ahhh! good point, maybe his back was turned. Theres a lot of things that could have led to him taking a crushing blow.. but it just purely boils down to him not paying attention it seems.

Ahhh...great point of him possibly having his back turned. He was grabbing Maulgar from the wall where he spawns, and pulling him to the opposite wall from that..so I bet he was running with his back toward maulgar. Still seems to me that he shouldn't have gone down, he was at just above 18k with pretty much all possible stam/health buffs, and we had two healers on him (pally/preist). So I guess it was a few peoples fault...him for not having his front towards the raid boss, and the healers for not keeping him topped off.

Also thanks for clearing up that those (c) 's meant crushing blows.

Nah, blame the dps'ers for not burning him down fast enough!

I've been hit with 4 attacks in 5 seconds by Maulgar before. (parrygib + arcing smash). That's usually when the tank dies.
