Prot - Crest or Darkness?Follow

I'm in the midst of Kara and was doing some gear checks as to what I want/need and what can be replaced outside of Kara. While looking at the shield options I see that Nightbane drops:

Shield of Impenetrable Darkness
4872 Armor
122 Block
+33 Stamina
Increases defense rating by 22
Increases the block value of your shield by 33

Which is really nice, but close to comparable with my:

Crest of the Sha'tar
4465 Armor
108 Block
+19 Stamina
Blue Socket= 12 Stamina
Blue Socket= 6 Stamina, 6 Parry
+3 Dodge Rating
Increases defense rating by 13
Increases the block value of your shield by 24

While trying to figure out which one is better I lined them up and here's what I'd gain/lose from obtaining the Shield of Impenetrable Darkness:

+407 Armor
-4 Stam
-6 Parry Rating
-3 Dodge Rating
+9 Defense Rating
+9 Block Value

Now of course you can have diff gems in the crest, but I got a +12stam and a +6stam/+6parry gem from a heroic. Next I want to show my calculations for loss/gain between these 2 shields(please correct any of my math if you see something is amiss). First, the facts:

1 Defense Rating = 0.423 Defense
+25 Defense = 1% Dodge, Parry, Block, Miss Chance

23.6538461538462 Parry Rating = 1% Parry Chance
18.9000000000000 Dodge Rating = 1% Dodge Chance
7.88461494445800 Block Rating = 1% Block Chance

Now to calculate what you will gain/lose. Keep in mind, OCD and boredom are a scary combination.. First, how much parry you lose:

6 ParryRating / 23.6538461538462 = .253658536585365358715056514076% ParryChance

So you lose about .25% parry chance. Next, how much dodge I'd lose:

3 DodgeRating / 18.9000000000000 = .15873015873015873015873015873016% DodgeChance

So you lose about .16% Dodge chance. Now, I calculate how much avoidance(not pure) I'd get from the 9 Defense I would gain:

If - 1 Defense Rating = 0.423 Defense
Then - 9 Defense Rating = 3.807 Defense
So - 3.807 Defense / 25 = .15228% Parry, Block, Dodge, and Miss chance

.15228% Parry + .15228% Block + .15228% Dodge + .15228% Miss = .60912% Avoidance

.60912% = What I get from defense on the Darkness Shield
minus
.412388695315524088873786672806% = What I get from Dodge/Parry on the Crest
equals
.196731304684475911126213327194% more avoidance for the Darkness Shield

So overall:
+407 Armor
-4 Stam = 40 HP
-6 Parry Rating = .253658536585365358715056514076% Parry Chance
-3 Dodge Rating = .15873015873015873015873015873016% Dodge Chance
+9 Defense Rating = .60912% Avoidance(not pure/including block)
+9 Block Value

So from what I can tell(provided all my #'s are correct) is that I get 407 more armor, ~.20% more avoidance, and 9 more block value. And I end up losing 44HP(with the Stam talent). So it looks like to me the Shield of Impenetrable Darkness is slightly better.

Really not much point to this post, but hopefully it will help someone out. I hate to work all this out and not share.. /shrug

Questions? Comments? Yelling?

I coulda told you all that before the crazy math. Now I'm all for seemingly pointless math, but this is ridiculous.

You gain some avoidance/armor/block value, you lose some hp. Go for Impenetrable Darkness.

You.... you made me sad....

I could have guessed beforehand, but I HAVE to know the exact #'s. I'm all crazy and ****!!! *cow noises*

I just feel bad for you spending time to figure out and type all that out.

I'd feel bad for me too, but crazy people do tend to think of themselves in the third person.. Like my imaginary friend Franklin.

Hopefully I've touched the life of a prot pally noob who's questions are now answered, but that is doubtful. I also accept cake and soda for payment on my work.

Those shields from arena 1 are kinda nice- loads of block armor and stam.. I may get one to hold me over till i get the one from bane.. the heroic badge one is nice as well. Right now i have the Platinum .. which on the low end of those is still kinda cool. Never had the sunbird drop though.

See if you had been holy, you wouldn't have wasted your time doing all that math, right Jack?

Now I actually read the post (before I just skimmed it to the conclusion) and now I noticed something.

Why did you wait until the END to do a rough number. You used 32 decimal places for Dodge, which just makes it incredibly hard to read. I think 2 MAYBE 3 decimal places would have been significant enough.

I just find it odd that you speant the time to write out 32 decimal places, then at the end you just say that you lose ~.20% more avoidance not some other 32 decimal point number.

I'm just sayin, if you're going to kill everyone with a wall of text math, at least be consistent.

If you read everything you would have seen:

Quote:
.196731304684475911126213327194% more avoidance for the Darkness Shield

Then at the end I summed it up with a less exasperating number =)

Since no one is yelling at me on correctiveness I'm guessing my #'s are correct, which makes me happy. Even though I have yet to see Nightbane...

Also, I'd like to add that 15 Agility adds .6% to Dodge Chance, something I found out today while debating enchants. No no no, not .63210346132641%, just .6%.

It was less exciting than the shield math.. =(

Everyone is still in shock you did so many decimal points. Probably too lazy to figure it out to that extent just to contradict. =)

Hrm... so many facts no one can argue....

I'll make something up about pallies needing to be able to block spells as well as melee. Slap on some 37 decimals with some big words... OH! And a graph of some sort. Present it to Blizz and watch the easy times roll.

Brilliant!

Well finals are over... I was CONTEMPLATING starting up WoW again (I have until.... Feb. I think until my account is really cancelled). But I don't think I would try to raid anymore, and doing those 70 instances over and over again is getting boring. I was thinking of making a 39 twink ret paly just for fun since around that level was the most fun I was having in PvP.

I'm close to done with raiding as well. The guild is very tiny and unmotivated. And I don't wish to lead anything anymore. Probably going to say adios to PvE as well and start up on some PvP once the Drood is 70.
