I looked over the 2 stickys and was basically looking for information about builds. I saw the samples "Greatest Mage Post Ever" gave but still had a few Q's. And please if your here to just flame me/tell me how big of a noob I am, please save it, its my first mage. I'm still having trouble understanding whats best to level with and why, and once u spec deep into one of those trees (40-43 pts persay) where do your rest go? If u spec deep in fire do u ever use the rest in frost, or do u always use Arcane as ur small spec?

Please kindly do not tell us what to do. Some of us have had little sleep today and are cranky. Giving us orders will be counterproductive. I must admit right now any little thing is causing me to want to squeeze someone's head until it explodes like a giant pimple.

That said, you have said that this is your first mage, so I'm assuming this is not your first character? If you have been good at your previous class and have crafted your own builds rather than just grabbing cookie cutter specs, you know that each talent you pick up will fall in one of two categories:

1)This talent isn't the best, but it's the better choice for unlocking a talent deeper in the tree that I want.

2)This talent will provide utility or damage to my build in a way that will benefit me.

Now that you have done this, spend some time and truly familiarize yourself with all the talents. Write down a list of what talents you could feasibly attain after you've reached the desired goal in your chosen tree. Then break them up into 2 categories. The useless and the useful. Be sure to write down why each is useful to your particular goal(in this case, leveling). Then you can decide which off tree is for you based on which tree will give you the most benefit for what you want to do.

As for which spec for leveling, honestly, there is no BEST spec. Only the spec that is best FOR YOU. Again, familiarize yourself with the strengths of the specs and their weaknesses, and see what most fits you. Don't be afraid to respec. The costs may seem high, but gold making in this game does come easy, IMO.

Ace is right.. there is no leet-uber-best-build-ever. It all depends. When i rolled my mage someone said frost and i was like...ok. I took a look at the talents.. played with a calc. and Lvl'd frost all the way to 70. Then as soon as i hit 70 i went full fire for about 3 days.. then a deep fire with some arcane for a few more days.. now i've been on ap/pom/pyro for a few weeks now (ok.. so maybe there is a leet build).

Point is i've seen it all... ever people claim that lvling with arcane was good. Just make sure you pick talents in whatever tree you choose that will help you right then and there. Some talents you can tell are based around PvP.. may not need those as of yet. With frost, however, I found myself actually not shooting for the bottom asap (i.e. 5 in first tier, 5 in 2nd.... so on). There's alot of really good talents in the first 3-4 tiers that you'll wanna get. Just make sure you don't try and jump around. Pick a tree and stick with it till lvl 66 or so. When I hit 70 I was full on frost.

p.s. FLAME!!!!

Auh thank you for the replies. This all makes sense, and yea I've leveled other characters to 70 before, and similar advice was given but for those classes there seemed to be a universal best leveling class. Rogue > Combat (i went assasination though and liked it more, like you're pointing out with mages) and Druid > Feral (which I did go).
