Can we hold A mob easy... yes.

Can we hold MANY mobs easy:
-Vs single DPS'd mob... yes
-Vs AoE DPS... no (I can't anyway... but that's a post I see typing in the future)

Your post really does not tell the story of your friend ripping hate off you.

I'm guessing he's a Rogue or Shammy. I'm guessing he opened with a high threat ability or spell (ambush and shock), even before you could get 1 maybe 2 Sunders off.

Thanks to the mob not facing you, you're not getting much rage from taking damage, which is starving you of rage, so not all the abilities you would like to use.

Meanwhile, your DPS buddy is constantly laying on the DPS, helping his Epeen grow on how he can rip hate off the tank.

God, I'm glad I have not been in a party like that lately lol. DPS tend to do that man. If it's a huge problem, like they're dying tell them to chill. If they're not dying, just keep doing the best you can.

Early levels I'm guessing you're not Protect spec'd. You don't have Defiance yet (and should not need until much later).

There's only so much you can do other than Taunt, Sunder, Challenging shout, Mocking blow (later on Concus blow will stun the mob keeping the DPS safe until Taunt is ready again).

The DPS needs to understand you're like a train. It's slow starting, but ones you get up to speed (with rage) you're hard to stop (err... pull threat from). That's why I hate when Hunters leave Growl on. I need dem rage points. If I'm figthing a Growling pet 80% of the fight the mob is not attacking me 50% of the fight.

Meh, stick with it OP. Tell him to calm down on the dps explosion.

You don't spam taunt. Taunt is only useful if someone else has aggro on the mob.

Tell your friend to let you get hit a few times and let you put a few Sunders on the mob before he starts hitting the mob or healing you. Also, it helps if the tank pulls the mob to begin with so he starts right at the top of the aggro list to begin with.

Use a shield and a one-handed weapon. Get in Defensive stance which is higher threat. Use Shield Block to both build threat and reduce the damage you are taking. Demoralizing Shout and Thunderclap are also good threatening skills to toss in now and then along with your Sunders and your Heroic Strikes.

Defensive Stance, Shield and 1Hand is the way to go for multiple mobs, you may prefer to dual wield in Defensive against single mobs. You lose a lot of your caster bashing abilities without a shield, so be prepared to swap back.

Defensive stance is the key to tanking, it generates extra threat requiring the casters to do huge amounts of damage before they become a target.

Taunt is your Emergency button, use it only when your friend pulls aggro. Don't use it on a mab thats attacking you, it can even be harmful.

Revenge is your big hitter. Hit this whenever it is up.
Devastate is your regular attack. You will spam this.
Thunderclap, Demoralising Shout should always be kept active.
Shield Block is your Defensive move, use it in your 4 move rotation.
Shield Slam also causes a fair bit of damage.
Shield Bash interrupts Casters spells. You should have See Enemy Cast Bar from Interface Options enables. Watch as the mob casts a spell and stop them before they fire.
Too Much Rage? Heroic Strike or Cleave will waste some excess for you. These don't count towards your regular cycle; these are extra attacks.

As your level increases you get better and better threat generating abilities.
