Protprotprot, what about holy then?Follow

So many prot build topics and i am curious about a comparison or readiness post about holy. Either prot or holy seems fun to me, but i have never been holy. I do not mind healing, but what i kind figure out is if dps is decent enough to grind, farm, quest?

Is there a certain amount of spell damage that can be seen as a bare minumum to be able to dps efficiently enough as a holy spec? And does that mean shocking or also shield+1h and Joc en SoR?

I am only level 62 and doing fine as prot, but i am not one to dismiss other possibilites and i might aswell enjoy other builds on my way to 70, cause i am sure i won't do the same thing again with a new lvl 1 paladin.

Recap, What's a decent holy build with solo/grind capabilities (questing/leveling) and what stats am i aiming for to make this efficient. Stats; decent stam and int, but focus on spell damage and healing (+?) and spell crit (%?).

Thanks for your time and effort

Check out the Shockadin build located in Cap Jacks' FAQ.

I'm a full Holy Pally, lvl 60, and can grind just fine. Maybe not as fast as Ret, but I can easily and quickly take out mobs a few level higher than me without having to heal. For solo grinding, I use a 2H for max damage output (for speed in killing mobs - again, not as good as Ret, but better than 1H). Judge Crusader, and spam Righteousness (throw in other spells as applicable). For groups, 1H + shield (since someone else is DPSing).

NOTE: Don't expect to AoE grind like Prot - it doesn't work that well. Can it work - Yes. Can it work well - No (at least it didn't for me).

As for spell damage - that will be a good chunk of your damage as Holy spec, so load up on Int gear (for crits and mana), sp dmg, etc...

Hope that helps.

When I was around your level I knew that I intended on being a raid healer so I actually switched to holy as I was going out to outlands. I forced myself to learn how to quest, grind, etc. as holy which makes things easier at 70 because it gives me the option not to respec to farm.

My Holy Paladin in +1820 healing has 750 spell damage, which is nice. I can actually kill stuff at a reasonable pace now.

That being said i switched to Holy at lvl 67 and trying to level as Holy suuuuuucked. As a Holy Paladin you won't be approaching +1000 healing until you are gearing up for Karazhan which means the most spell damage you are going to have unless you build a spell damage set will be 300 which ain't enough to make it worthwhile.

I love Holy end game, I love being a healer. In my 7 years of MMO gaming this is my first healer and it is some of the most intense gaming I have had. Makes playing dps seem like a walk in the park. That being said I personally wouldn't recommend leveling as Holy, unless you are getting very close to end game and are looking to gear up. Even leveling in dungeons and with groups it was hateful.

Gah! You've stumbled upon my plans to corrupt the youth of the Paladins on these boards towards the order of prot. No matter, it is too late now.

It was too easy. As a youth I was fascinated by the idealogy of Protection Paladins. Reading, learning of it's secrets and formulating my plans. I started here asking questions, not for my own benefit since I already knew the answers, but to slowly plague the minds of others. Then I left, leaving my ideology softly brewing in the minds of others.

This eventually caused Cathela to become mad, thus he stopped posting and eventually left the boards. It was about this time that I came back and slowly became a respected member of the board. Not only respected, but kind and informative, even giving myself the title of "Honorable" to give people a false sense of security. When I volunteered to write a new FAQ, there was almost no opposition, save one. Bodh was the first thorn in my side, yet he too eventually came around, while not corrupted, he eventually endorsed the new FAQ, which is heavily slanted towards protection paladins.

Since then, there have been more and more protection paladins on the boards, and there has been less and less resistance. Dilbrt was the next thorn, attacking me on my status, persuading me to turn to the Holy path. Eventually he succeeded and mentally forced me to destroy my physical body, unable to login anymore. Unknowingly, he made me stronger than ever as my spirit still lingers on these boards, giving advice to new recruits and converting other recruits from the holy order. When he wrote a new guide for Holy Paladins and seeked to have it Stickied, I offered to include it in the FAQ instead to both cover it up and ensure that Holy members would still have to read the FAQ.

And now I am still here, and my stain has been left on the boards. Should I be destroyed my followers will continue my legacy, it is too late to stop me now!

Yes, and it was your constant barrage that destroyed my physical body, preventing me from learning further secrets.

I was gonna go BWAHAHAHAHAHA! and agree with Jack, but then I realised that I love being holy and it would make no sense. Oh well, c'est la vie.

Totally love Holy, been it since the beginning, except for the time I tried Prot and didn't like it much. Soloing can be a little tough till you hit great equipment from BC.

Definately want too look for +int, +stam, as well as any +heal and spell dmg stuff. Theres a lot of cool Plate stuff for healing, so u get the added stuff for healing and higher armor/defence.

Thanks for the response. And do not mistake me with some of those prot pallies who havent taken the trouble of reading the faqs/stickies. I for one have, however i missed the link to the comprehensive guide and wasnt able to search for it...

That's because it was written recently and I don't know who to talk to, to get it stickied. Until it is I have to rely on others linking it and bumping the thread to the top.

I levelled to 70 as holy and it's really not that painful (I tried killing things at 70 as prot and to me that felt harder).

When I entered outlands I had 0 spell damage and around 4k mana (yay for pre-BC itemisation), by level 65ish I had around 400 spell damage and was finding it a lot easier to kill things. With the change giving some spell damage from healing items it should be even easier to get a decent figure.

I went with 1 mob at a time (apart from places with easily killed mobs, like the orcs east of temple of telhamat), using a 1h and shield with SoR or SoV (for alliance). Basically slowly wearing the mobs down while maintaining high health and mana. I didn't focus much on crit for my grinding gear as I went for steady killing rather than burst. However if you wanted faster killing (using Holy Shock and JoR a lot) then you'd probably want a higher crit level.

That being said, now I've hit 70 I don't grind or querst much on my paladin, it's not nearly as efficient as the other classes I have.

LOL Jack converted me to Prot from RET.. Jack remembers haha.. how useless my ret gear was. Personally i love playing tank.. it's a lot of fun instead of standing back healing or being ret and watching your dps like a mad blackwoman.

... I really hope the tank belt drops tonight.. and moroes pocket watch. IDC which. Jack have you seen the new tank set in shatt from badges? It's beastly to say the least!!
