Crit?Follow

I have a question about how crit works on DoTs. I don't think DoTs can crit so what function does crit % have with DoTs? This is probably a noob question but I haven't seen any info about it so I just want to be clear.

Thanks in advance :P

Crit chance has absolutely no bearing on DoTs, but the opposite of crit, resilience, reduces the damage they do.

The only dot that can crit is Immolate when it first lands. Seed of corruption can crit when it explodes, but the actual dot will not. Curse of Doom will not crit, but if it's amplified and the Improved Shadowbolt debuff is up it may seem like it does.

So the high crit % I see when I look at lvl 70 Affliction 'locks is just a byproduct of gear and the Int they have for their mana pool?

I'm thinking that you are assuming that the only spells that warlocks cast are DoTs...

Well for Affliction 'locks I would think that DoTs would be the majority of spells they cast. I don't know what kind of spell rotation a 70 'lock has in a raid or whatnot. I can see why a Destro 'lock would have, and need, high crit% but for Affliction, not so much. I realize I'm very ignorant on this subject but that is the reason I asked the question.

Improved Shadowbolt, leads to +20% to all shadow damage after a shadowbolt crit.

That's why affliction locks have it. All those dots at +20% damage? That's a duh.

A normal casting cycle for me (full affliction) is Curse of whatever, Unstable Affliction, corruption, Siphon Life, and Immolate. After they're all on I have about 2-3 shadowbolts I can get in before I have to start reapplying dots. With the improved shadowbolt talent every time it crits all shadow damage taken by the target is increased by 20%. So while other stats are more important to an affliction build, crit is definitely something to look at. If i can get 1 of those 3 shadowbolts to crit all my damage (except Immolate) goes up by 20%.

Hence the importance of crit even in the "all about dots" build.
