MagesFollow

Hi. I was going to make a mage for the first time today until someone told me that that was a bad choice. They said that warlocks fill most of the dps in later raids and that I would be rejected a lot from groups. I was wondering if this was true or not. If I do become a mage, which I do, do I take Skinning and Mining since I have no money, or should i go into tailoring like everyone says too to get the spellfire stuff? Thx I really appreciate your help.Have a good day ^^

Mages are just fine on DPS. Skinning and mining is fine for leveling. You can always drop a profession at 70 and level tailoring when you're rich from the gathering professions.

Uh-huh. What he said. We also have EZmode crowd control. And that whole refreshment thing that I haven't gotten around to learning.

Caveat: Check out some AH prices on your server if you're picking professions purely for their cash generation. I'm doing skinning and mining on a recent clothie alt, but I've found ore prices to be so insanely high that I'll probably drop skinning in a couple levels (I'm L.18 now) and pick up tailoring. Mining is making way more money than I'll ever spend while leveling.

Mages are quite viable in end-game raiding, true properly skilled/geared locks to crazy dps, but mages have other bonuses. Our CC is among the best, we ARE the AoE class, AI/AB is a nice buff to the healers/mana users. A good mix of all classes is necessary to have a successful raid, so no matter what class you roll raiding is in your future!

Quite the opposite. I am always asked if I can attend a run.
I'm heavy fire and cause serious damage, even at this level.

I can't speak to the High lvls stuff, but...

I am doing Tailor and Mining. I picked up Cooking for no reason and it's easy. I picked up fishing - but have never tried it. I am leveling First Aid because it goes hand in hand with Tailoring. As my tailor gets beyond cloth I make bandages out of it. (If you don't already know the way cloth drops is from mobs in a certain range. So as I move from cloth to wool and wool to silk, I still get drops from the lesser cloth. Well - it doesn't seem to sell for much - so I turn it into bandages)

I am a 130 tailor and I have spent very little - I just level in places where I can farm. Basically any humanoid mob will drop cloth. It's very easy. Plus the humanoid mobs tend to group together - so they are easy to level/farm on.

Mining is a bit of a pain. I don't like it because I need to find silver and it's a random pop. Not like tin or copper which pop in certain zones. Silver pops in tin zones, but not all the time... It pays well though!

Thanks

Don't drop skinning. It makes huge amounts of steady money.

Rugged leather goes for 10g plus on some days in my server. Thick leather sells fast and at a stable amount. You won't believe the amount of leather needed to make things, so leather sells quickly. Besides, its a stress-free profession. Don't!

I agree with skinning entirely. As an example, a couple of us were doing some quests in Un Goro lastnight. I picked up 3 stacks of rugged leather, a couple of thick, and even Devilsaur leather.
ALL leather was sold within an hour in the AH, netting me a very tidy sum.
Devilsaur goes for about 12g a piece on my server :D

I can get rid of a stack of rugged for about 25g

As someone mentionned earlier, a mage's CC is one of his most usefull tools. Mages are really usefull in 25 mans such as SSC and TK (and now ZA as well). As far as damage goes, I'm standing high on the dmg charts and most of our locks have good + spell dmg, and I still out DPS most of em.

Just learn how to play your character, and everything should be fine.
