Hi, Im new to pally and plan to spec Prot. But There are soooooooo many talents that "seem" like I need them. My question I want to ask the pally community is, what talents should I avoid? What talents will be most saught after? Thanks for your time.

All of that and more is answered in the, oddly-named, FAQ.

Ive actually read it a few times. The FAQ doesnt really discuss the indiviual talents, but more of cookie cutter builds. What I am looking for is talents that may seem like a good talent to spend points but infact are not worth the points spent. Like Imp. Devotion Arua, it seems like a very important talent, but in the end game builds shown in the FAQ, they leave it out of Prot spec builds. Plus, the FAQ more deals with talents as far a end game raiding, not really for leveling builds. And as a personal note, I will never ask a question unless I have read FAQ's a few times.

From the FAQ:

Quote:

2.2.2 What talents should a Paladin be getting as he levels?

...

For AOE grinding, just get talents that you would get if you were tanking, the only exception being that SF can be a good investment, though not required. Get Redoubt, Anticipation, Toughness, Shield Specialization, Imp. RF, BoK, Reckoning, BoSanc, HS, Sacred Duty, One-Handed Weap Specialization, Imp. HS, Ardent Defender and Avenger's Shield.

That's pretty much in order of when you should get them to maximize your prot leveling. I didn't change it for 2.3, but you should grab Combat Expertise as well.

The reason why things are "cookie cutter" is because they take the good stuff and ignore the things that "seem" good but aren't really. And sorry wait what? You don't like the builds because they're end game but you're talking about Devo being not useful end game. Don't expect to level a paladin with a respec in the middle somewhere (unless you're a fan of making it hard on yourself). And specific to you: few people level as prot until you can max out reckoning.

Oh yeah, and you haven't told us what level you are. 1? 14? 40? 65? It makes a difference.

If only there was a section about what early paladins should take to level...

Again, it depends on which of the methods above you want to do. My personnal recommendation for single-target grinding is to first move up retribution, grabbing Benediction, Imp. Judgement, Imp. SotC, and then SoC. After that, move up Holy, getting Divine Strength, Spiritual Focus, Healing Light, next 2 whatever, then Illumination, and Divine Favor. Once you have DF, there is almost no downtime between pulls. After this, you can move down holy to get holy shock, or you can start moving down Ret towards CS.

At level 61, I did this, but you don't have to. I respecced to 10/31/11. This gave me SF, Reckoning, HS, and SoC. I gave up my DF, but I gained the ability to tank in instances, and by myself I was able to put out more dps, especially when Reckoning would proc, giving me usually 3 hits (2 normal and 1 SoC proc), and still keep my uninterruptable heals.

HS, Ardent Defender and Avenger's Shield.

i'll add. prot is also one of those trees that pretty much sticks with you til 70 with little or no modifying, if you choose to level with it.

however, if you level holy or ret, you will respec at certain levels to suit a variety needs. for instance +10% int/str is a waste of points at low lvl whereas SoC is godlike. Spiritual Focus is like whoa at every lvl, but imp Bleesing of Might is pretty meh at any lvl.

if you do plan to stay full prot, it is recommended you respec to the other trees at least once and for a few lvls. the knowledge you gain from switching your roll will help you vastly later in the game.
