Rolling need for a different roleFollow

What's the etiquette for rolling need on gear that will help you in another role? For example, if I'm tanking an instance and a piece of great +int/mp5 gear drops, am I justified in rolling need 'for my healer gear'? If someone else in the group needs it, I can see passing, but if no one else needs, and it's just going to go be DE'd into a shard, could I need it?

I pretty much do it exactly as you said. If no one else needs it then I will need it, but if anyone else does then I will just pass. Some people will still get mad it seems, but in my opinion most times it if out of being greedy.

The way I see it the loot system should go
Need right now > Need for later > greed

For me, it's all about fairness. My base assumption is that in a PUG everybody gets one "guilt free need" per instance. If you're gonna roll need on a second or even a third item you're taking gold out of your partymates' pockets. That shard that it's going to "just be DE'd into" is valuable after all.

If you're talking about leather tanking or healing armor that is a clear upgrade for you and uniquely benefits you, even if it's off-spec, you should have some right to need it. But personally, if I ever 'need' a second piece within a dungeon, and it's only happened a few times, I'll straight up "pass" on subsequent loot in the interest of fairness. At that point I'm so psyched about multiple upgrades within one dungeon I'm happy to do so.
