Arena Weapons for Tanking in 2.3?Follow

I'm just curious what everybody thinks about the viability of using arena weapons for tanking in 2.3. Now that devastate replaces sunder, it seems that fast weapons are not nearly as good as slow weapons for generating threat.

Since there really aren't many (any?) slow tanking weapons, I'm strongly considering picking up one of the arena weapons to use as my tanking weapon when I'm full prot. I know resilience isn't as good as defense rating, but it's not that much worse and still helps to get uncrittable.

What do you guys think about this?

Sure, it's more TPS/DPS.

I think I'll keep my kings defender though.

As long as your not losing threat any MH weapon will do the job. It's not like DPS is a HUGE part of our TPS anyhow. with Shield slam and revenge, I generally try and keep devastate to a minimal use (re-apply the sunder debuff...). I have yet to play around with the TPS for the imp devastate though.

I like my rotation, and HS is good threat too. Which a faster MH gets more out of for TPS.

Sure using a high damage weapon is a nice way of boosting your tps, I'm not so convinced however with regards to the overall benefit of slow weapon tanking. You certainly would see a boost with regards to the threat generated on devastates and the like but it is worth considering the other stats that dedicated fast tanking weapons provide. Key examples would be the mace off lurker in SSC which (now) gives expertise rating and the new tanking axe in ZA which provides some nice hit rating. Both of which can provide significant tps boosts. Given that the latter drops in a 10 man you just know you're going to wind up getting it to drop eventually.

Just remember when you talk about HS threat compared to devastate threat you have to remember that with devastate you get the white attack as well.

Not that white attacks develope that much threat for us but from my own experiance using 9 rage on a devastate with a slow weapon overshadows 9 rage HS with a fast weapon by a long shot. Add in the fact that you get devastate threat and the threat from the white attacks.

I still use HS for rage dump but my cycle is SS, revenge, devastate, devastate, repeat.

Thanks for the replies guys. One thing that I have to consider is that I'm not going to see anything outside of Kara, Heroics, or regular 5 mans. My guild only runs one Kara group, for which we've had an established MT for a while, so I've focused on getting DPS gear so that I can get into the runs. However we went to ZA on Tuesday and go our a$$es handed to us because we don't really have a decently geared second tank.

So I've volunteered to take that role, and I'm looking for ways to upgrade my gear. I don't have a king's defender or a sun eater. I'm currently using the Crystalline Kopesh, so I'm thinking a S2 weapon would be a pretty huge upgrade for me at this point.

Besides it's got the advantage over a tanking blade in that I can use it for soloing or if I go D/W Fury.
