My Mage and PVP Woes...(Boo Hoo!)Follow

#1 Nov 15 2007 at 5:24 AM Rating: Decent
Ok, so I've finally hit 70! Hurray!

Thing is my gear isn't bad, but not great - so I'm grinding for honor and doing lots of PVP. I haven't PVP'ed in quite a while and god!, things have got uber tough for us Mages! But of course I'm up against players with epic gear so things are very tough.

But I have to admit I'm losing faith in my Fire Mage. It seems that most classes (with the exception of Warriors) absolutely dominate me!

Hunter's now have Silencing Shot. As if it wasn't hard enough to cast when a Hunter is pelting you with a ranged attack every second and their pet is taking chunks out you - they can now silence you! Yes, I can polymorph their pet but even casting that spell off is sometimes nearly impossible.

Rogues slice me to pieces in seconds and use Mind Numbing Poison so I can't cast, which, along their vast array of stuns etc means I don't stand a hope in hell.

And Warlocks! Bloody hell! Might as well just give up before I start! They can now Devour Magic effectively rendering you completely and utterly helpless! As is having a near instant cast Fear wasn't enough as well as countless DOTS and a minion. And then they can use Spell Lock! I mean give me a flaming break here!!!

So I'm feeling Mages are really getting a raw deal here in end game PVP. Can anyone shed some light on how the hell I'm mean't to beat these classes? What do you think?

Oh yeah, and another thing! Warlocks get a huge stamina buff from their imps of + 70 stam as well!!!

And can make their own health stones!

Give us Mages the stamina buff for heaven's sake!!!

Is Blizzard taking the **** or what!

Well, fire is usable in PvP, but not the best. It'll get better when everyone gets ice block, but still will be the lesser of the 3 trees for PvP. I enjoy deep arcane for PvP as I have the MSD, which makes your next cast (I choose AM) a 50% cast time (so you get pelted with missiles every 1/2 second). You have to have a *lot* of +damage for that to be worth it though, when arcane spec, I run around 1100 +damage unbuffed. Slow is also excellent in PvP. In fact, it's best in PvP (watch that warlock take 100 seconds to cast fear... oops, he hit me with a deathcoil and then howl of terror... ).

The best PvP build is full frost (IMO). The only thing you get from the 17/0/44 build is improved CounterSpell, which is nice, but not worth the 15 points that lead to it. You get a water pet that can use a ranged frost nova, cold snap, ice block, ice barrier, permafrost and frostbite. Your goal is to snare and destroy (or slow them and run away for help).

Remember that in PvP, you are almost always fighting with a group, or you are getting hammered by a group. The only time you get good 1v1 is when guarding a node and a rogue pops up. This is when frost is much better than anything else, but rogues are really tough against cloth (as they should be).

The goal with hunters is to get inside their melee range and stay there if possible. Their shots hurt much more than their swords. Lots of PvP un-aware hunters will do silly things when charged and they forget things like laying traps and such. With 2.3, hunters became a lot better in PvP, but a lot of them also went marksman spec, which I'd rather face than that big red pet.

Also, remember that PvP on a mage is twitchy, meaning you have to know where your hotkeys are and use them. No clicking, or at least very little clicking.

Warlocks are easier to face as frost as you get a free 'clean me up' from their dots and such with ice block. But with that fel puppy out, and their ability to banish your pet, a medoicre warlock will almost always beat a good mage.

Also, go to Evertas' page to see more frost tricks. It helps a great deal to know other classes (which is why I have so many alts).

Thanks, that's a good point. I've always tried to keep my distance - but using my instant casts up close would be really effective against a Hunter. :)

The 17/0/44 build is good for Arenas, but you're correct, it's not nearly as good for BGs.

Let me give you a quick run through of what you can do:

  • Stay in a group, at least until you're truly geared to run out on your own. The group should be able to keep you protected, and your DPS should be used to the full extent.
  • Blink when stunned, get the trinket to deal with other problems, and ice block when a lock has you dotted/feared.
  • Water Elemental against harder classes is great, pull it out and fight like crazy.
  • Always sheep un-hurt/un-targeted healers! Keep in mind, that with the PvP nerf on this it's only 10 seconds, so you'll get probably 2-3 spells off, then you can recast the sheep! It's worth it! They may pop their trinket, which is fine, sheep again.
  • Ice Armor in PvP! Is the BomB! That rogue whose got you stun locked, that warrior whose annoying? Ice Armor can solve that, by slowing their attack/movement speed you can get some distance and start the Pay-Vay-Pay
  • For hunters, after you sheep their pets, get into their melee distance and enjoy easy bliss!

If you're reading my post correctly, you'll start to see that Frost is going to be the best PvP spec. It's great for groups too, for gearing up to raid. I prefer it, since my DPS is awesome, my CC is awesome, and I can kite like crazy!

EDIT: Ktangents post is great, read through that as well!

The posters before me gave very good tips. Here are some things that are generally applicable in pvp.

I call em the Golden Rules

1. Distance: If it cannot hit you while you can then make sure it stays that way.
2. Snares are king: Makes doing 1 easier
3. Get away and live to fight another day: deaths are going to diminish the honor you get from BGs. They also sap your morale making it less enjoyable
4. Not all One on Ones are meant to be won: certain classes given the right situations will eat your face, the same applies to them. Catch anyone at a bad time for them and you can take advantage.
5. Learn how certain class and builds work. What they use as bread and butter and defend against them. Example most warriors if not all will follow charge with hamstring, for a mage not blinking during 1sec stun can be a life saver as blinking will put you in range for intercept if its not on CD.

The most important thing about pvp is to make your target play your game with your rules on your terms. A fight with you in control is a fight that you can win.

I agree with that to a point. The choice between Ice Armor and Molten Armor for me is a choice of spec. If I'm a frost mage for PvP(and most are) with Frostbite, there's absolutely no reason to pick anything other than Ice Armor. However, if I'm a fire mage with Impact, then there's a good reason to pick Molten Armor. Reduction in enemy crit chance is awesome, but gets better when combined with the fact that it gives you more crits of your own and allows you to proc Impact if a foe reaches you and begins attacking.

With Warriors you need to tank the "Charge Stun" and blink only on the Intercept one...or he will rip your face.

Rogues are easy when you are Frost, kite and kill...cast when you can. Blink when he get you from stealth (he´ll be slowed by Ice Armor...or better yet, he can be trapped by Frostbite), then start nuking him, Nova when he's close (but not close enoght to melee hit you)...if you feel so, put your pet out and he'll get realy annoyed. When he pop Cloak of Shadows, try to run a little and Block when he's close to you. If he Vanish, get out of the Block and spam some AE rank 1, or if you are preety sure where he is, Nova him...it´s cake. If you kite him well, all that he´ll do on you will be some Deadly Throws. heh

Hunters are not that hard, even after the patch. You don´t need to stay always on his melee range, you need to "dance" between his melee and ranged zones...better yet if you make circles on him, spaming your instants (if all on CD, AE his ***)...Nova/Lance, pet Nova Lance...if you manage well, your Novas will get their pets. "Dancing" between his zones will make him waste a lot of global CDs and make no dmg on you (if well done). As a Frost Mage, particulary, I prefer to fight the Beast Masters then the Marks ones...it´s much easier to control when to use Block and Pet. When he pops Bestial Wrath, just let him/pet break your Ice Barrier (kiting the pet a little bit) and Block...when the Block expires you will have a good time with him...since the BM Hunters don´t hit any hard when BW is on CD...Marks are different, they always hit hard...and they have Silence Shot, Scatter Shot and some other tricks that really hurt if well used. When you get trapped...stay trapped until his Aimed Shot is comming to your direction...then Block...=P

Not much to say about Locks...Locks are to Mages what Mages are to Warriors...a kick on the nuts. You can clean your DOTs (and cancel a Fear alltogether) with Block...try to nuke him asap. Counterspell his Affliction Tree (Fear, Howl, Drain Life/Mana) and some of them stays really disoriented...put you pet out and try some Novas/distract his attention. It´s a hard fight...always.

I'm sorry to give you only Frost directions for PvP, it´s just because as Fire your chances on high ratings or against well geared foes are really low. You can´t kite very well and your crits will not hurt much, your survivability is poor and you have near to none defensive moves. On bgs, an Arcane/Fire build (3 min Mage) can work...but even with that burst, you may not kill someone with high Resilience, you can try to kite with Slow and such (as Ktangent stated), but you can´t beat the effectiveness of a Frost build on PvP.
