Question on Affliction WarlocksFollow

#1 Nov 14 2007 at 4:31 PM Rating: Decent
This is my very first post ever and had a question regarding affliction locks in pvp. I recently changed to affliction to give it a try. I was orginally demonology all the way with a little in the affliction tree for pve.I tried out my demonology build in pvp and found I could be # 2,#3 best over all damage.I then figured heck why not switch over to affliction get even better over all damage then I had? I tried affliction in pve mode and found it nice as to no down time.I really thought that was awesome!.Now in pvp though I noticed after playing a few WSG,AV,AB my damage output isn't as high . Now here I have a few questions.

1. I read in some other forms about timing your instants so it may allow more efficient damage overtime. If this is so, Could someone give me advice in which order to place my dots and also how long I should wait between dots before unloading all the dots on a target? It seems it takes longer to bring a person down then when I was demonology using my felguard and just 2 instants and immolate.

2. When your affliction do you rely on fear more? I know every lock uses it here and there but it seems after your 2 instant fears (howl, death coil) if the opposing side has their insignia trinket,or ways to counter fear, they come back at you with a disrupt to the normal fear which seems to happen alot. What other options as an affliction lock do we have? I really want to know if there is more then moving around keeping dots up and try to get your fear off.

I will appreciate your advice. Thanks : )

I was in your same state, because when I switched, I had the same problem, but trust me if you play your cards right, and you know how to time dots, you will do LOTS of damage.

Demonology is mostly based on 1on1 combat (with some exceptions) and affliction is NOT that (maybe thats why you had such low damage, using a different playstile build with same playstile as demo).

With aff you want to just DoT the hell out of every single target you see, with unstable affliction as top priority, since healers cant dispell it (well they can, but then its just better for you) and it gives space for your other 4 dots to tick freely, altho still open for constant heals, very much like a PvE Boss fight :)

About dot rotation, I'm sure people know more than me, but as far as my rotation goes, I do UA, (if amp is up, amp curse) CoA, corruption, siphon life, immolation.

After your dots are all up, hes probably swarming all over you, thats where Howl comes in to save your ***. Just pop it, if hes anywhere near a smart player, he will pop insignia and get out of it... thats where LoLcoil comes in, saving your *** yet again, once hes in the deathcoil, cast fear, and because he just used insignia he will get lolowned for 10 seconds.

Once all dots are up, you basically want to drain life and/or throw shadowbolts every now and then, but normally straight out drain life is better, because you get tons of healing thanks to it and the bonus from soul siphon, keeping you up, and you can get the not-so-rare instant SB, wich is incredibly nice to have in a pvp situation of any sort.

Afflocks do depend a LOT more on fear than demo or destruction locks, but the pros of it is you can do HUGE amounts of damage to a LOT of targets, even when you already died, how cool is that?

Dont get me wrong, demo and destruction are still very good PvP builds, but destruction is based on really high spell damage and very high crit chance, and in demo builds if you are against another warlock, its gg already.

So try out Affliction in PvP, I hope you(as I did) will just fall in love with it and its dirty dots :D

As affliction, I tend to be in the top five for overall dps for bgs- it requires a different play-style from demo *shrugs*.

Imo you should be behind a tree/hill dotting everything you can - drain-life will only let them know where you are. Imp battery to save you from life-tap.

Good spell rotation, I would suggest iDoTs (coa, corr, siph life) then UA - but it depends on which healers are with the enemy group, and how "distracted" they are.

For 1v1 pvp, affliction locks do fine, it only takes some preparation (which is why I personally got Feldom). Even bm hunters are easy with VW bubble - this "all purpose" pvp pet is great for most fights, and gives you the edge you need (damage mitigation) to overcome almost any class. At the same time, it might be in your best interest to switch to felpuppy to take on an annoying caster(s). Affliction is more depended on pet-per-situation, since you aren't just running around with felguard 99% of the time. The only two classes which give us difficulty are CoS rogues (no cd) or warriors. Warriors can easily be handled, provided you have a vw - decent rogues with no CoS cd are our anti-class *shrugs*.

Affliction will also allow you to rack up damage against pve elements in bg (AV mainly).

Other things like CoE are amazing for kiting, trapping, or impeding (flag) players.

Personally, I start the DoT sequence with Corruption. If feel, since Nightfall/Shadow Bolt only has a 4% of popping each tick with Corruption, one should start "rolling the dice" as soon as possible. Just my opinion, though.
