Might be helpful for those looking to determine a bit more about their best choices in gear.

It looks so pretty, but I'll admit it's confusing me just a tad.

I'm trying to work out gear for my frost mage (currently 69); for my trash set (lower hit rating) I'm torn between Tempest's Touch with 2x +7 spell damage gems (yes I'ma cheapskate) and Gladiator's Silk Handguards

Am I right in thinking that the extra spell damage will be better than the crit for now (as I'll be in the 800+ bracket with my other gear) as the red number is bigger than the yellow number?

If you hadn't guessed I suck at mage itemisation :)

Edit: Wait, think I got muddled (what a shock)
Tempest's give me +9 dmg over the gladiator's, so 9x0.53=4.77 increase in dps (from the table).
Gladiator's give me an extra +21 spell crit, so 21x0.236=4.956

So I think the Gladiator's are better, sorry for gibbering to myself a little, feel free to yell at me and I'll edit my post to a generic 'nice link'.

Another edit: If I put 2x 9 spell damage gems in the Tempest's they come out at 6.89 increase in dps. Damn them!

Edit: Oops, didn't notice the part where you said frost mage. Your math looks fine. Smiley: grin

I did edit my post to include that because I remembered that crit makes more of a difference for other specs :)

You know, looking at it, that table was last edited pre-2.3(back in August, actually), and doesn't include the removal of the damage tax, so it's not currently as useful as it seems. However, if they update it in the near future, it'll be very useful.

Am I wrong in thinking that spell damage becomes 10% better now (sure I read the damage tax meant you only got 90% dmg added to spells, so now it's 100% = 10% increase in effectiveness), therefore you could multiply your dps increase for spell damage by 1.1 to get the new value?

Knowing my luck it's probably much more complicated than this.

I'm willing to bet it is a bit more complicated. But it'll be a little closer. We can just hope someone updates it soon. Smiley: smile

Pretty sure Ded is going to update it soon. He was hoping to have it up by the time 2.3 went live, but he probably had 3 days straight of sims to run >.>
