outland gearFollow

#1 Nov 12 2007 at 9:40 PM Rating: Decent
So this question while it may seem like a total noob question, let me clarify a little. My question about gear is really focused on hellfire and then probably Zanga where I'll head next on my hunter. I've done like 95% of the quests in hellfire, just have overlord and the rock flayer matriarch quest that I'll probably just hold off on for a lvl or two.

From what I've gotten as far as quest rewards has really been pitiful, at least in hellfire. For the most part the mail rewards are more geared toward shamans with the increase in spell damage. Leather looks a little better at least stat wise but the armor numbers are painful. Even in ramps and furnace the couple of times that I've run them the few pieces of mail that actually drop are geared again toward shamans.

So the true question is, am I going to find better mail hunter gear in the other areas like zanga and terrokar or any instances? OR has blizzard decided that hunters that want to do anything in outland should be wearing leather for the stats even though that causes some problems when it comes to soloing and our pets lose aggro for whatever reason; the mail gives us a little more wiggle room to get the aggro off us and back onto our pets.

Any thoughts?

I feel your pain. Many/Most of the quest rewards in OL seem biased towards Paladins (for plate wearers) and Shammys. There is some very nice Hunter gear to be found though. A lot of my gear is still green drops that i have been fortunate to loot. While i realize that i am definately not "well" geared, it serves me well and i do just fine in any normal instance i run.

I have only recently turned level 70 so i cannot speak for Heroics. I have only done the 70 instances a few times so i only have seen a very limited assortment of leet lewtz. Just keep plugging away, " blah blah" of the Bandid gear is VERY sexy for a hunter. Lots of it drops and on my server the few pieces i purchased in the AH were quite cheap. To answer your question though, get used to a lot of shaman loot for quests. Several quests in Nagrand dont even offer a mail reward.

Loved your gear by the way. So I don't have a huge problem with running instances with the gear that I have and the few pieces that I've gotten as quest rewards in hellfire. For anything before lvl 70 heroics should I look more towards leather simply for the stats?

Put up your armory link. People WAY more experienced than me can defintely nudge you in the right direction.

Hmmm, maybe I am just gearing up wrong? I've seen tons of mail so far from Outland quests with +agility, stam, and AP. I figured that's good for hunters so I've equipped it.

Here's my armory link:

Am I gearing up hopelessly wrong?

What about my one socketed item? Did I socket it like a moron?

Edit: I don't know why Carrot on a Stick is showing up, I have that hunter trinket from the ST quest equipped in that slot, Eye of something or other. I sold my Carrot on a Stick as I respecced to get that mount speed increasing talent until I at least get to 69 and can equip a Riding Crop.

A quick and painful answer is that you'll be really frustrated with gear choices from 58-70.

However, There is a nice Mail "set" geared towards hunters that drop from the level 58-65 instances. They don't have matching names or any item bonuses, but it does all match, and the stats are pretty good up until 70.

If you're worried about your gear pre-70, then I suggest downloading AtlasLoot Enhanced and checking out the gear that drops from instances. I remember that there are two nice pieces that drop from Ramps and good shoulders that drop from (I think) Slave Pens.

As for how you're doing right now, you're not bad. Change out the ring of the whale. Your build could stand a bit of tweaking, but I'll let the BM hunters tell you more about that, since I haven't been BM since before BC.

The Armory has been bugged for me, too. It hasn't updated my gear and buffs since friday, but for whatever reason, it did pick up on the fact that I changed guilds.

Yeah, the ring of the Whale is my priority in replacing. Good thing I have a replacement lined up:

Quest reward for a quest I'm gonna do tonight.

As for my build, I read a bunch of threads on speccing, looked at a bunch of Beastmaster builds, and chose my build based on what I wanted out of them. I could have made some dubious choices, but I'm pretty happy with what I have. I used to have the improved revive pet ability which I've already come to miss severely, but I can live with more downtime.

At your level my spec was something like this and was working well, though yours isn't nearly as bad as some I've seen. In fact it is close to the cookie cutter BM raid build, but the one above should work better for soloing/questing and should work fine as you instance when your pet can still really off-tank.

Your gear isn't bad, stam/agi/AP is the bread and butter at that level(the agi and AP are obvious, but without the increased stam to help your pet out he can't take the hits in OL as easily). As you get up higher you'll get more stuff with int and mp/5 on it.

There was an awful lot of shammy stuff from quest rewards as I recall, but some of it will do well for you as you go.

A couple of things to look for are:

Ramparts:
Garrote String Necklace
Scale Leggings of the Skirmisher
Blood Stained Ravager Gauntlets

Blood Furnace:
Warsong Howling Axe

Slave Pens:
Coilfang Needler
Scorpid-sting Mantle
Trackers Belt

the leather shoulders from the last boss in blood furnace are pretty good too.

And there's a blue chestpiece from a quest in HFP and ofcourse bladefist's breadth from the overlord questline.

How'd I forget Bladefist's Breadth?

I love how this post went from me essentially ranting about lack of hunter gear quest rewards in hellfire, to a semi rate my build thread.

armor means nothing really to a hunter so I wouldn't sweat it.

Unless you are 100% PvE, Armor does mean something. Wearing leather for stats is all okay unless you go all out, but it will make you a far more squishy target in PvP and on encounters with alot of mobs or random threat resets.

Unless I'm just totally ignorant of which stats are beneficial for hunters, I think I've done pretty well as far as gear upgrades in Hellfire... or maybe I was just severely under-geared when I hit OL?

As I write this, my armory data hasn't been updated, but from what I remember, I've already replaced the following:

chest (quest reward)
helm (quest reward)
neck (uncommon drop)
one of my rings (uncommon drop)
trinket (quest reward)
2h weapon (quest reward)
ranged weapon (quest reward)

And I still have some other upgrades to look forward too once I run Ramparts, specifically my gloves. So far I'm loving OL!

This isnt 100% complete but its still pretty useful.

And don't rule out rogue gear, I would much rather have agi/crit/hit than int/mp5.

I've ran Ramps 4 times so far, no Garrote String Necklace so I'm just gonna move on anyway. I have both mail pieces you mentioned, but I prefer the gloves I am wearing to the Blood Stained Ravager Gauntlets. My gloves are from the Ramparts quest and give me more damage.

As for the Warsong Howling Axe, if it drops I may loot it but I'm shooting for a polearm from a Sporeggar quest. I'm running Blood Furnace more for the Legion Blunderbuss.

Edit: I just checked my own armory link and that is most definitely not my current talent build. I respecced the other day and it hasn't updated it yet.
