steady shot Follow

Ok so I've done a little reading about steady shot and can't really figure out the usability of it. From what I've read mainly on wowwiki is that steady shot is a good shot to use in instances and raids over aimed shot. It does about the same amount of damage but does it cause less threat? Thx for any info

It has no cooldown and can therefore be weaved in between your normal autoshots given you have an autoshot delay of 2.5 or more, any less makes it a little difficult to time it right and not eat into your autoshots. Rapid Fire lowers your shot timer, for all shots, including the casted one like Aimed AND Steady Shot.

Basically using it correctly can more than double your DPS depending on how much you crit and whether or not you clip off autoshots.

One more thing though..... this kind of question is just about the most basic and therefore easily answered question anyone could ask on the Hunter forum so please before you post a question like this again consult the big yellow thread at the top of the thread page, normally reffered to as a sticky entitled.....

EVERY QUESTION ANSWERED HERE!!!

Steady Shot... Well, it has a faster fire rate than Aimed Shot, has no cooldown, and when you use Concussive Shot on your target before you use Steady Shot then it makes your damage to that target noticably higher. Overall I think it is much better than Aimed Shot and I use it all of the time in PvP, PvE, and in instances.

do NOT try to use concussive shot to get higher steadyshots.
Its not worth the mana.

Steady shot is good for a few simple reasons:
1: its cheap
2: it has no cooldown
3: it has a short enough casttime to fit in between autoshots.

Thus, you use it after every autoshot if you want to do serious damage.

The most important thing why steady shot is great?
It does not reset the autoshot timer!
Thus by weaving it in between your autoshot you double the rate with which you shoot at a very low mana cost.
Additionally the damage per mana of steady shot is very good. Simply the best shot to use when killing stuff.

as BM, you end up shooting 1 each ~2 seconds for a total mana usage of 55 mana per second.
cant call that cheap ;P

As soon as I got steady shot (about 2 days ago) I started changing my shot rotation. I never use serpent sting anymore, even while grinding.

Learning how to steady shot effectively should be your number one priority at 62, as it bumped up my dps to a completely new level and has made grinding hella easy. (Not like it wasn't before or anything)

I also ran a BF yesterday and rocked the damage charts even while double trapping a mob on each pull. 47% of damage done in the instance when combined with pet.

For intense burst damage hit a steady shot after an autoshot goes off and then immediately hit a arcane shot after the steady shot hits. If all 3 crit you have a chance of pulling aggro, especially on lower level runs. Just warning you. :P

edited for sleepy mistakes I made last night.

But remember dont ever try to use it in PvP..I am tired to see hunters get killed in PvP cause they try to use steady shot...For farming you dont need it..but in raids is amazing!

You can use it in PvP as long as nobody is attacking you. If someone starts attacking you while you're casting it, abort the cast.

Yeah, in BGs it's amazing how often I'm left alone to just stand back pumping out Steady, Arc, Multi without even missing autoshots. The only ones that might do something would be Warlocks tossing DoTs or Rogues that go for the back anyway.

I guess our arrows aren't too easily spotted in the fray, so we get to do alot of damage before people notice us, unlike Mages and Warlocks who has either Giant fireballs/Frostbolts or Shadowbolts and very visible and audible DoT animations. Hmm.. I think I'm heading back to AV later. See how many kills I can stack up from back in the pack. The sheer number of Killing Blows in group PvP is fun.

Are you kidding? I never am out in front of the pack unless I am the only one left. I usually stay with the grou, and sit behind everybody esle (Hawkeye FTW) just killing and killing and killing, getting **** tons of KB's, then when everybody else dies of they see ZOMG a Hunter, thats why we have been dying! Then I become the first target they all look for :S

Ergh, where on earth did you see anything about being in the front of the pack?

hmm, lots of spelling mistakes. Maybe Caldone actually can't read. o.O that would explain everything....

Even with the spelling and grammar mistakes, I understand what he was saying. It's not that hard guys.

I think he was reading a bit too much into the 'back of the pack' statement. No hunter should ever be in the front of a group unless they like advertising "Here KILL ME!"

I can't speak for arena but in BG, I got my highest number of kills being in the back middle of a large group. I could rain holy heck on the enemy and they had a hard time targeting me. Sadly, where I actually contributed the most was defending spots. I got the least kills but it worked best for the BG group as, interestingly enough, hunters are great defenders. I could usually hold out long enough for reinforcements to arrive, then after I died, I could rez and immediately join back in the fight to finish the job. Then back to guarding... <sigh> my numbers always reflected my role... I wished you could get more rewards for defense!

Best thing about the mid-back of a group is that you are right in front of the healers (who are cursing that the guys in front keep running forward and get out of range). As soon as a rogue/cat or some fat 2h axe swinging cow sprints up to you, the healers notice! You get all the heals you need and maybe even a PW:S to get to range with.

I'm going to nit pick that statement.

Hunters make exceptional advance scouts in the new AV. Since both sides will now leave a fair number of defenders in their towers etc., having a Hunter at the lead with Track Humanoids can help a group be prepared for what they might find when they go in. Now, I fully agree with your statement when it comes time for the pewpew, but since 2.3, I don't even mind going toe-to-toe with a lot of melee classes. I've been having a TON of fun with the Wing Clip joust lately (and frustrating the hell out of Paladins/Warriors in the process).

I agree...it becomes a targeting nightmare for the front-of-the-line folks to pick you out of the mass of Warriors/etc. and try to kill you. Sadly, it's not common enough that we've got a wall of melee in front of us such that we can pewpew with no risk, so it helps to recognize when someone has a bead on you and adjust your shot rotation accordingly. All it takes is a Frost Bolt here and a Moonfire there and that sweeeet steady shot has just clipped two auto-shots out of your rotation. A nudge forward/strafe/etc. will abort your steady shot so you can resume the dps with auto/arcane/multi before you're just another crispy corpse and a giggle in a Fire Mage's throat.

@sloshot, I was just making fun of Caldone because he's caldone. Of course I could understand him. I was confused by his apparent disagreement with north, when he was saying the same thing.

I understand that... which is why I was making fun BACK at you two... ^_^

I certainly wasn't defending Caldone. He can defend himself, but how well he does it generally has to do with his BAC...

That also might explain the spelling an grammar problems.
