New Druid Add- OnFollow

#1 Nov 12 2007 at 9:02 PM Rating: Decent
So last night it dawned on me whenever I find a piece of armor for my kitty I always have a bad habit of mathcrafting it like crazy. So I thought I would save myself time and try to make an add on for fun that would take two items and compare them to determine which would increase your base dps more. Now before I start getting in on this project I just want to make sure that there isn't something like this out there already (as the only add on I have ever and will ever use is outfitter, I'm just not big on add ons). So does this sound familiar? Or could this be a step in saving a lot of headaches and us from hearing posts from the less informed on "is item x better than y?". Also, would you like to see an add on like this? I just want some feedback, thanks in advance :)

It's pretty funny that you have the know-how to create addons for WoW and yet aren't that big on them. : ) DruidStats does most of what you're talking about, maybe all of it depending on your exact meaning, and does it well. It's at the top of my short list of favorite addons along with Outfitter, SmartBuff, RangeRecolor and Auctioneer.

It adds to an item's tooltip exact numbers for how much AP, armor, HP, crit, mp5, spellcrit, etc. an item will give you, taking into account your current form and talents.

You say "compare them to determine which would increase your base dps more."

"Base DPS" is just a function of attack power though, right? Not taking into account crits? If that's all your talking about then load DruidStats, look at the AP numbers and call it a day.

It might be interesting if you could come up with something that rationalized AP and crit into a "Ballpark Total DPS" figure for cats, and rationalized armor and dodge into a "Mitigation Value" for bear form. I don't even know if it'd even be logically possible to do so, but that's not my problem, I'm in marketing. : )

And even if you do all this you'll still hear "is X better than Y" because between AP, crit/dodge, HP and stamina there's just many factors to consider in gear...in most comparisons one item will give you more of something but take away something else. Is adding 15 AP worth losing .25% crit? Is adding 500 armor worth losing 400 HP? Not only does it depend on what you want to do, it depends on your current numbers. Maybe you're low on AP but doing fine for crit. Maybe you're armored like a tank but don't have much stam.

As such, I propose that we all come up some other Druid add-on for you to spend your time on. : )

Damn.

Oh well, I'm sure somebody will have a recommendation.

Well what I meant was by calculating the base DPS an item gives, is that I wrote an algorithm to calculate the DPS an item gave taking into account other things such as talents and base dps, as DruidStat does, but my goal is to make it one nice little number instead of putting more numbers in the tooltip. Actually when I did more research on doing add ons I found out that they had to be written in lua >< the skeleton program I wrote just to play around with in java. Nonetheless here's the algorithm that I wrote to calculate base DPS and I'll explain it, who knows I could be way off. Keep in mind this formula as of now is assuming your 70 and have 5/5 HotW, in patch 2.3.

((str*2.2+agi*1.1+ap*1.1)/14) + (agi/25)*dps

(str*2.2) = AP from +str of item
(agi*1.1) = AP from +agi of item
(ap*1.1) = AP from +AP of item
(everything/14) = Turns +AP into +DPS
(agi/25)*(dps) = Theoretical AP from crit(assuming 1% crit ~ 1% dmg, therefore for every +crit% from agility * base dps = +DPS)

Btw, if this formula really does work feel free to use it, I'm sure someone seasoned in lua will have a much easier time writing this than I will :)

There is an addon called "Pawn" which allows you to set multiple scales.

In the tooltip for each item, I have ratings for Tanking, DPS, Healing & Balance for that item. Makes it much easier to compare on the fly.

I highly recommend it. Once you reach the "+hit" cap you can easily reduce +hit's value in the scale and other such modifications.

An easy way to get started is just to plug Emmerald's values into the formula. (These can be determined by looking at the gems page on his spreadsheets)
