AoE speed...Follow

I was just wondering what the average time is per fight with the AoE grinding system (including combat time and down time), and how mobs are usually pulled per fight.

This is assuming moderate gear (i.e. semi-recent greens with the blue spellthread on the legs) and fighting mobs at least 1-3 levels below you (maybe 4-5, but in general 1-3). How many mobs should I be able to pull, how much time for combat, and how much downtime after how many fights?

I doubt seriously that anyone could give you accurate times, outside of a ballpark.

It also depends on your level. When I was in my 50s, I would get 40-50K xp per hour. You can do that math and figure out how many mobs it was, etc, if you'd like. I just remember it as mind-numbing. ;-) Were I to guess, I would say I could pull around 10 at a time, 3 times in the field I was in (sorrow hill?), use all my mana in the process and drink 1.5 times...

So maybe you couldnt give me an estimated time...but what about the cast sequence you used? That would give me a good estimate...what I'm trying to decide is if it would be better for me to go fire or frost for the particular way I'm levelling. As it is right now, I don't really need stamina because mobs usually die 10-20 yards away from me after 3 casts: pyro, fireball, fireblast. Since they're low enough (2-4 levels below in the place I'm at) that's all it takes. I usually only need to stop for mana every 2-3 minutes, especially since casting pyro allows some mana to regen.

First you have to round them all up. When you get a mount, it's easy, since they don't get much chance to hit you while you aggro a good dozen of them.

I've never done it myself, I've never even had a mage past level 10. But I'd think it goes with a frost nova, move away, then spam blizzard. When they get free and come at you, either nova again, or cone of cold, or explosion.

are you talking aoe grinding or just grinding?

if aoe pulling more that 3 mobs and you are doing that ^ your dead if you are talking normal grinding it will take way longer that aoeing

he's trying to see if it would be more efficient to level using aoe grinding then quest/leveling using the current fire method.

I would estimate it takes about 15-20 seconds for a single pull (depending on the pull) from start to finish (including stragglers that I wand down).

Well here we go.

An AoE pull will:

gather (3-5 seconds)
Frost Nova (instant)
Snap-Steps, blink (1 sec)
Blizzard (8 seconds)
Blizzard (8 seconds)
Cone of Cold and Re-nova (2 seconds)
Run and Blizzard again (10 seconds)

An AoE encounter will take approx 30-40 seconds plus downtime.
That is...if everything goes to plan.

edit:

An average pull could have anywhere from 6-12 mobs. I generally ignore pulls of 4 and below just because its a waste of mana/downtime.
The trick is, no matter how many mobs you have they will take about the same amount of mana to kill.
Just a little more skill.

So if you assume 1 minute per pull (add in 20s down time), and 9 average mobs per pull, you're looking at 9 MPM (mobs per minute). So I would need to spend 6 seconds per mob, which is just what I do casting pyro.

At 6 mobs per pull, I'd need to do a mob in 10 seconds, and that's pyro + my cast sequence + 1 second...so I guess the frost method is faster. But I'll stay fire til 40.

Thanks for your help guys!
