I have a lvl 16 nightelf druid, looking at specing 47/14 with the most in feral the other in resto when all is said and done. Some of my friends say I should use a staff all the time, the others say 2h mace. Whats your input on this? This is my first druid.

At this point, use whatever will give you the best stats. Once you can gain access to gear from BC a staff will be your best friend as there are specific weapons that give Feral attack power. There is one 2H mace that is available at 70 once you have Exhaulted rep with the Cenarion Expedition that is considered one of the best feral tanking weapons out there.

But for now, go for weapons with lots of either str, stam, or dex.

To further make the point, the ONLY thing that matters on your weapons is stats. When you're in furball form NOTHING else matters...not weapon speed, not the weapon's DPS, not procs like fiery or icy...none of it.

To get the most out of your druid, even feral spec, you will probably want to carry two sets of gear...one for feral duty focused on strength, agility, and stamina, and one for casting/healing focused on int, spirit, and stamina.

Generally speaking, in my experience, the best weapons for melee are 2H maces, (especially of the tiger and of the monkey) and the best weapons for casting/healing are staves.

Happy drooding.

I'm pretty sure you meant agility....

I have used both two-handed maces and staves; maces tend to have higher stamina and staves (in my experience) have had more strength or agility, as well as the intellect and spirit preferred for healing. This is probably because I never bought anything except for shoulders and a helmet in AH, and I have fairly bad luck with usable drops.

Yes I did mean agility, was thinking in D&D terms at the time.

Until Outlands, where most of the feral weapons (ones giving Feral AP) will be Staves except for Earthwarden at 70.

Absolutely. I figured that as a level 16 he's got months before that'll affect him, and when he does see those staves it'll be pretty obvious.

Yep - going to have to reiterate the above as it's rather important ;)

All that matters on the weapons is the stats .. as in our forms (which are really useful to be in while levelling) we use our paws as weapons so the dps/weapon speed of weapons don't matter as we're not using them (thus they don't proc either)

Just look for the highest str, agi, sta combo on the weapons.

Staffs and maces tend to be the best while levelling (staff from WC or DM instances for instance), ..of the Monkey/Tiger from AH etc. All great.

Happy adventuring, fellow druid :) enjoy the journey.

/agreed and QFT all of the above responces....but to be that guy...

...ok, druid weapon stats like chance on hit and DPS only matter while NOT in animal form...., if you are in non-shapeshifted form, wacking a monster with your mace/staff you are gaining the effects of a chance on hit stat or a DPS stat....but at that point, you have larger issues to deal with,

it really depends on the stats. agility and strength are what you need for feral. usualy around lvling up to aobut 50 most of that is on 2h maces. when you get around 60-70 most of your weapons you will need are staffs.

A couple of times as I've been leveling up I've found a nice dagger, so I pair it with an offhand item. It always amuses me when I shift out to heal and see "Your skill in daggers has increased to 6."

I use a 2H mace most of the time. I have a hard time with 1H weapons just because I come across so few good offhand items.

I too refer to Agility as Dexterity frequently. The people who never call it Dexterity are the same people who've never come across Quiet Riot or the beige M&M's.
