Using my level 30 hunter at the moment, and any ideas on new pets? He's alliance, but i've gotten (Almost) into Thunderbluff, so going into Horde territory is no problem, but any ideas?

Check out Petopia for detailed information on pets.

There's simply too much to consider and try to regurgitate here when Petopia has it all laid out in brilliant and organized detail.

This age old question is always difficult to answer because it really differs for each player. Some people see pets as just another weapon. So pets that have abilities that allow them to do more DPS, or take more damage or draw more agro are what they tend to look for. Other players see pets as a companion and thus their combat abilities are often secondary to what they look like.

I am very much a member of the latter group. This is why I have pets like a pink tallstrider, a black widow spider and an albino crocalisk with my many hunters. But even so, I sometimes find myself in need of a DPS pet. So I recently tamed a level 60 cat to go along with my pink tallstrider on my female dwarf hunter. But even though I needed a DPS pet I still had to find a pet that I enjoyed having at my side. I could have tamed a level 70 cat or a level 70 ravager, but I didn’t like either of those.

So what pet is best for you is really a personal decision that only you can make.

Tigers are the best pet you can get in my oppinion (Not for damage, for being your pet) I don't know why, but I love my tiger (Called Striker, almost called him Sir Rocks-a-lot) and I feel he's the only one i'll stick with :) I wuv him

Find and bookmark Petopia.

You should be leveling two pets, chosen for taste and individual needs.

I recommend a boar for everyday farming, as charge is the greatest aggro available to any pet. Charge, growl, a good hit, and you will have to be way overgeared for your level to pull an NPC off your boar.

For the second pet, I recommend hard core DPS. Cat, Raptor, Ravager. Any of these will serve you well. Ravager is the highest DPS by a slight amount, but also the ugliest. Up to you, really. You will have to be careful with aggro management, but this is something you need to learn, may as well learn it now rather than later.

Use the DPS pet in any instance or group situation. Normally, your pet will not be called on to tank much, and it is better that you bring a pet that can dish it out.

A boar is the LAST pet you want in an instance, as it has a tendancy to charge trapped and other CCed NPCs. Not good, not good at all. At best, this will get you killed, at worst, it will get you booted from the group after the second or third wipe.

Leave your third stable slot open so that you can tame temporary pets for the skills you need to teach your main pets.

That was a very good post. Rate up. *smiles* The only thing I’ll add is that the problem with the boar breaking crowd control can, I’ve read, be fixed by turning off charge while in the instance. The bug isn’t with the boar, but with the charge skill.

When you use a boar in an instance, you learn to turn off auto-cast charge the same as you normally turn off auto-cast growl. Just use the ability manually for the first attack, and for any other times you need it.

My pet is my tank, so I have a boar. Charge, growl, bite, attack, and he's already above the threat that I'll make over the whole battle. Then he has enough armor and HP that most of the time against one mob I don't even have to mend him.

I'm trying to learn how to keep aggro on him for more than 2 at a time.. One is impossible to pull from him, even spamming distracting shot. Two is barely a challenge. But the third or more usually gets me feigning death and trapping, which wastes time and mana. That's not to say I can't (or haven't) taken on and defeated up to 7 green mobs at a time. I just prefer not to. :-\

For me, I love my boar. I miss him even for the few minutes I go to capture a trainer for better charge, bite, and cower. For you, it's the same as anything else: Pick what you want, and what you think is more fun.
