Question about some feral gearsFollow

I recently (today) just hit 70 and a friend had invited me to run Botanica a few times with him. The first time I had some overboard dps's (as lv. 69) and I had a hard time keeping the mobs on me. The second time (as level 70) I had a healer that said I was too squishy and proceeded to get pretty angry with me.

I am not ego crazy or anything, but throughout the prior 69 levels I always performed pretty well as a a tank, people seemed pretty happy with me most of the time. Then out of nowhere it was bam!, "you suck!". It was a pretty disheartening situation. My tanking style was pretty much the same thing as I had been doing for the last.. forever, but I kept being told I must have been doing something wrong.

My actual question is two-fold:

Is there something at the level 70 instances that I should be doing different than what I have done thus far? (I don't see this as being the likely solution, but there was an ex-feral druid in my first group that seemed to suggest that my "style" of tanking was off).

What I feel it is (from the second healer saying I was too squishy) is that my gear is not up to par. I did not have a chance to do many instances from 62-70 because my playtime was pretty sporadic, so I ended up questing/soloing the majority of it.

So with the idea of my gear being terrible I started researching some of the 62-68 instances for gear that I cold obtain to better my tanking abilities and I didn't see anything that stood out a lot over what I already have, so then I could hit up the higher instances and not suck. I didn't really see anything that was WAY better than what I have.

Also, I checked out the suggested tanking gears for tanking druids on the Druid 101 thread, and most of it seems to come from stuff that is more difficult than what I was attempting in Botanica. SO, after some long-winded explanations... can anyone give me some hints on gear/playstyles/etc. that might help me out?

And to give you an idea of what I have stat-wise (all un-buffed):

Armor: 9094
Health: 9544
Defense: 350
Dodge: 22%
Strength: 271
Agility: 266

Any tips would be appreciated, thank you.

While I think your health is ok to start level 70 5 mans, you have very low armour for a bear druid.

Could you post a link to your armoury so I can take a more detailed look? That being said I think you should definitely pay the cash to get the Heavy Clefthoof Set. They are awesome for tanking and will give you a flat 5k armour and 1500 health just from those 3 items (if socketed for stam).

Another thing I noticed is your defense. Only 350. I don't know if you have the talent Survival of the Fittest but even if you do you will need to get your defense to 415 to avoid being crittable. You will need ~154-156 defense RATING to get your skill to 415 and the clefthoof set will help with that too.

More advice to follow after I see your armoury

Like previous poster says... health is good, dodge is good, armor and defense bad.
Get Clefthoof set, you can probably even get them underpriced if you arent
leatherworker yourself, many people sell especially the boots for under 20g
just to get skill points.

Some rings also have a great deal of armor and defense, Hellfire Ramparts
endboss have a ring that is not half bad for starters at lvl 70 for one.

This list is also worth a thorough look.

If you are lacking in defense, there are also glyphs, enchants and gems that can
help you, but I found after gemming for +def & +stam (enduring talasite)
that I had too much defense (paired with some resilience), and replaced them with
+stam or +hit. That can be expensive.

Oh, and the reason for getting defense is that you become immune to crits from
bosses. You want this.

Two Quest lines in SMV will get you the Verdant Gloves, and Manimal cinch (belt)
that are pretty good for tanking.

The clefthoof set I found was pretty much a must, I still tank with it in kara and gruuls. (tho i replaced the boots with the ones from H-roic UB)

Work on your Cenarion Expetidion Rep, and get the Earthwarden tanking mace.
You really only need to come up with ~65 (remember your base is 350) to defence to hit the 415 cap (as long as you have talents of course) its better to have a bit more, than 414 btw.

Theres a nice tanking cape in Slave Pens (bogstrok cloak) that really you wont have to replace till Kara (again i tanked kara and gruuls using it for along time)

You can get the gm shoulders (soon S1 shouders) for honor, gem it with stam gems, and get the glyph from your faction (aldor/scryer) at revered. (gives you a nice stam boost till you can replace them)

Theres a feral staff in Botanica, dunno if youve gotten it or not.

As for actual tanking, Lacerate Lacerate, Mangle, Lacerate, Lacerate, Lacerate, Then just hit Lacerate, Mangle when its up, and maul too. Not too hard. Keep up your fairie fire and Demoralizing Roar, tho not alot of threat, they do help you both in your dmg caused (threat) and damage taken (making you take slightly less damage.

Good Luck.

It may have been a problem of expectations. It's not like you ding 70 and are anywhere CLOSE to nearing your potential. You are a "baby 70" and should set expectations as such, not with apology or embarassment but just so people (especially your healer...) know.

Yeah, your gear is nowhere near par for a 70. Sorry. It's really weak, to be honest.

But the good news is you're dead wrong about needing to run stuff harder than Bot to upgrade your gear. There's a ton of stuff in the druid tanking starter kit at http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/class.html?wclass=6;mid=1184859383323516343;page=1;howmany=50#m118486006860405180 that are easy to get.

STEP ONE
A quick trip to the AH would boost both your armor and HP by 50%, and getting your defense rating to 415. I recomend that you run, don't walk, to the AH, and buy:
A) Heavy Clefthoof boots, pants, and chest
B) Braxxis Staff of Slumber (it's like 30-40g and almost as good as Earthwarden, without a grind to EXALTED with Cenarion Expedition. Gak.)
C) Stylin' Purple Hat
D) Necklace of the Deep
E) Demon-Hide Spaulders
F) If you can't afford any one of those pieces of armor, at least pick up any pieces of Dragonhawk..., Expedition..., or Murkblood... "of the Monkey" pieces for the phat agility and stamina. Don't spend much on any of the above slots, though, nor on bracers or belt. They'll come soon enough.

If you can afford enchants (and get the pieces recommended above), throw +35 agility on the staff, +6 stats on the chest, Clefthide Armor Kit on the pants, and +12 agility on the boots.

If you can afford gems, throw +defense rating into your clefthoof set until your def hits 415, then throw stamina and agility into every open socket.

STEP TWO
Run, don't walk, to Shadowmoon Valley and do the quest chains that will lead you to top-shelf tanking rewards Umberhowl's Collar (bracers) and Manimal's Cinch (belt).
http://thottbot.com/i30942
http://thottbot.com/i30944

There's a quest line that'll lead you to a great DPS hat there, too, the Stealther's Helmet of Second Sight. http://www.thottbot.com/?i=58965

Verdant Gloves come from a quest that originates in SMV, but that's deceptive because it does require an instance run, can't recall which one. But if you count up above, you'll see we just filled almost all of your slots without entering a SINGLE instance. Cool, huh? : )

STEP THREE
Run Botanic with that same healer and say "How ya like me now, beeyatch?!?"

That's just my two cents, though. : )

Jeebar, thanks for the specific info. From what some of the other people had said I went and got the manimal cinch in pretty short time, and I bought the heavy clefthoof boots. I plan on buying the other 2, but they weren't on the AH at the time.

With those two pieces alone my armor is now at 11933, and I can only imagine with the other two. Thanks for the recommendations about the other gear, they are really helpful.

You're welcome. Glad to help, and glad to hear you're already on your way.

Don't wait on the Braxxis Staff of Slumber, though...it might be the best bargain on the list and at least on my server there's always one for sale.

With 550 armor it gives you 2,750 armor in bear form (more with Thick Hide) in a slot where you currently have only whatever you get from agility on your wep. That's sick. And the +39 stam gives you 400 HP. And the staff will last you so long you can throw +35 agility on it without thinking twice, unless you need that money (like 200g I think) for other pieces on the list.

Like others have said your armor is(was) low, my lvl 61 Druid has 9400 in bear and I don't have thick hide talent. Just to give you an idea how low that was for a 70. Anyways seems like you are on the right track, good luck.
