I'm a bit confused as to what base dps you're using in these calculations.
I gave all of my assumptions in the quoted post. DPS = AP/14. Real DPS varies vastly depending on a lot of factors. I have no way to accurately incorporate factors such as player skill at not clipping auto shots into a spreadsheet.

Right, but I'm talking about tooltip dps not skill. And so 1800/14 would be the wrong number to use for the dps and so would throw off all of the calculations.

How about AP/14 + weapon DPS + ammo DPS? Since you're making assumptions about what stats this hunter has, you might as well make assumptions that they have a given weapon and ammo. If you want to argue for non-raiders, make it Valanos' and Blackflight Arrows. That will up your values by at least 80.

And then each talent tree has modifiers. Beast Mastery has a direct +20%. MM has +5% and a host of other effects. Survival has extra crit rate, benefit from agility, and Expose Weakness. All told, I don't think it's fair to make a baseline assumption of at least +10% from talents. The only talent I see you directly considering is Mortal Shots, although you may be incorporating Lethal Shots.

For theory crafting, you should assume perfect shot cycles with no lag.

to Azuarc: I'm not sure you have to factor in the 20% in the BM tree actually. Couldn't you look at it as boosting dps after the gems have been factored in? As such it would simply magnify the differences.

The SV and MM talents make a big difference though. SV there is no question, I think the "switch point" I calculated was somewhere around 150 dps or something.

I'm not theorycrafting. I'm showing the DPS gain comparing 10 of each of 3 different but equal 'quality' gems. The math used even offers a very slight advantage to the AGI/Crit gems, and still the AP gems come out ahead.

Theorycrafting, using the gems which allow for the highest 'stock' DPS increase will be the best choice. No matter what bow, arrows, Talents, etc are then factored in, you're starting from the highest base.

Theorycrafting, MM and BM Hunters will see better DPS using the AP gems until they reach some arbitrarily high amount of RAP. Higher than a Kara equipped Hunter plus buffs is able to reach.
Similarly to the gems, augments offer the same 1 AGI or 2 AP choice, and the AP choice gives the best performance. For gear it's not always as cut and dry.

I won't make the same statement for SV Hunters, as they have so many different 'on crit' effects that I haven't taken the time to try to map out all of their abilities.

Right, but your base dps is wrong. That's why your crit isn't having as much effect.

Not saying this guy's one of the "top hunters in WoW," but here's a video of a T6 hunter in PvP action:

I'm happy to be shown the error of my ways. So, please tell me how you would weigh each of the three sets of 10 gems. I'd appreciate if you'd use specific examples such as I did, for ease of comparison.

I have no idea what the base dps is, so I'm going to refer to it as X

10 Bright Living Ruby 160 AP	160	0	X+11.429+2.514(pet)
10 Delicate Living Ruby 80 AGI	80	2	X+5.714+(.02)(1.3)(X) + 1.257(pet)
10 Smooth Dawnstone 80 CSR	0	3.6	X+(.036)(1.3)(X)

We want to find out when the Agility becomes better then the AP to start.

X + 11.429 + 2.514= X + 5.714 + 1.25 7+ (.02)(1.3)(X)
13.943 = 6.971 + .026(X)
6.972 = .026(X)
6.972/.026 = X = 268. (which is the same as my first answer.)

So Agility gems are better when your dps is above 268.

Agility and crit

6.971 + .026(X) = .0468(X)
6.971 = X(.0468-.026)
6.971/(.0468-.026) = X = 335

so crit is better then agility when your dps is over 335.

(note: for SV agility is always better, because their talents boost agility)

Tables, use tabs... and the "PRE" function, see site FAQ.

#39REDACTED, Posted: Nov 14 2007 at 12:27 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Ahoq is PvE geared, so really, hes not the top hunter in WoW, as too prove that, you'd have to fight other hunters, with a PvE spec, that fails?

... X is the base dps. It is a variable. So it can be any number. My calculations show that when X is 268 agility gems are better then AP gems. So go look at your tooltip dps, and if it is higher then that switch. I'm really not sure how much clearer I can be.

Are you just not understanding the math? It's just algebra, but I've taken 5 years of university math now, so I sometimes take some knowledge that other people may not have for granted. If it's that I'll try to explain my initial equations in more detail.

you could use 268 and numbers slightly higher and lower as the base dps and that will reflect what I'm saying.

I'm glad theres other people to think about these things and do the number crunching... I can read the threads, take the advice then just sit back, pew-pew and have fun.

As for the comment that a BM hunter is going to do more damage than a MM hunter both with out pets... I just don't see that happening. According to my damage meters I out DPS BM hunters during raids and instance and still do a majority of the trapping. Granted; they can dust my bags dueling but, whoop-adee-doo. Dueling won't down a boss and get me gear.

Did this thread take a turn somewhere?

To Dfexpc

I know a similarly geared MM Hunter that performs really well, near top spot on gruuls etc he does out dmg me by a little bit without pets but difference isn't great; when counting pets, I outstrip him by considerable margin but not sky and earth difference.

It's not your fault, it's just that when people throw around DPS numbers it's good to know exactly what they are talking about. Tooltip DPS, WWS DPS, etc. They will all show different values, and as I said it does make a difference.

So.... With all my +AP gems, I have a little over 300 tooltip DPS (with AotH and TSA). Do I start to replace my AP gems? Or is the 300dps without gems?

that's some amazing crit for a non SV hunter. What could he do as a BM though with that? I'd think it would walk all over MM. 30% speed increase with 45% crit raid buffed would just be incredible.

You can never have too much crit as any spec Hunter, it scales way up there. So yah /envy ;p Though that Denoz guy needs some +hit.
