Levelling to 70... (Talent related)Follow

#1 Nov 07 2007 at 10:31 AM Rating: Decent
Alright... I've never really tried a post in forums for this kind of thing, so please forgive me for any innormalities on my part.

I've been playing this game for quite some time, and recently decided to play a warlock, going affliction all the way. My warlock got level 40 earlier, and i got dark pact, which made me certainly quite glad. After I got there, I wasn't sure where to go next for my talent points, so off to the talent calculator I went; however, after I got there and worked out what I think would work best, I came up with a Hybrid spec. Honestly I didn't really see a point in going much farther in affliction, as it stands my voidwalker has a very tough time keeping the enemies on him, so I don't care much for seed of corruption. Instead I went demonology with my remaining thirty points, going for Mana Feed. Is this a common build? Is there a decent chance it will work well, at least in the levels leading up to 70; even if there is a talent redo afterwards?

is the link to my build.

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated.

The above page does not exist.

But just reading your post, an Affliction build shouldn't really have the Voidwalker out at all. Generally I use my Imp, otherwise why have Dark Pact at all? Personal opinion, but still.

As for a hybrid of Affliction/Demonology - I'd think it would be very viable, but you will be missing out on Unstable Affliction and Felguard both, which personally I think is rather the point of the respective trees.

Hmm... I tried the link... it works fine for me...
Well... that's why demonology with mana feed as well with the voidwalker, as it stands he usually has a fair bit of mana for me to take anyways, so with mana feed tackin on to that, and improved life tap giving him extra mana, it shouldn't be much of a problem?

You can certainly "drain hunt" w/ the vw out - with any build, or no build at all.

Many aff locks prefer to "drain tank" instead; it's a tad faster (if you really master it, it's better than a tad faster - and it can get challenging if you take on multiple targets).

Read the compendium and study the two techniques. It's the top thread.

At 40 you can't mana feed, so consider drain tanking w/ succubus or imp out, although felhunter works if you want him out cuz you're in a pvp realm (and you think you might have to fight another caster pvp).

Edit, it's not a build I'd use. If you go to dark pact, why not go on up and get UA? It's killer for pvp/bg. If you never pvp/bg, then okay, maybe you don't want it. If you want a strong vw and mf, I guess you could go that far into demon. But you might want shadowburn over in the destro tree, along w/ the talent that lets you cast 70% uninterrupted. Better for pvp, but drain tankers go for that if they "play at the edge" (i.e. take on lots of stuff at once).

Or for instancing you can up your dps by going for certain destro talents.

Or for instancing, I think you could try some different demon talents for more dps.

Why skip instant howl of terror. That talent is KILLER.

If you're 40 and not sure which way to go, just wait. Don't spend the points for a while. Or try stuff - it only costs a gold to reset the first time (then 5, 10, 15... to 50).

By going 31,30 you are missing the "oomph" from both talent trees. You don't ahve iHoT or Unstable Affliction, and you don't have Soul Link, Fel Guard or capped master demonologist.

Seems like you've put together a pretty good setup for questing and grinding, but it will lack in raw DPS unless you specialize to one of the potent DPS talents.

But still then, it would be an alright way to go going to seventy and doing the quests there? Before starting any major PVP or Raiding? I was thinking of doing a respec afterwards, depending on how i want to continue my character at that point, but it's best to be there before planning on it, if i understand it correctly... Like, I don't plan on doing any PVP until i'm level seventy, and decently geared, same with raiding (obviously): and to me that's a decent PVE build, for one who fights about five monsters at a time, and has the voidwalker take ninety percent of the damage.

For grinding this would work very well.

For PVP or any special situation this build would fall far short of going further into each tree.

VW is one of my least favorite mininons because he is so boring. He's got great armor, and pretty good HP, but he can't hold agro for anything versus a good Fliction lock, and he doesn't put out any damage.

Fact of the matter is as any sort of fliction lock (or PVP lock for that matter) you should have the second most HP in the group after the tank (i have had more hp than Warrior tank on quite a few occasions on my trip up there actually)... and that is definatly saying alot. There honestly is no reason to rely on a tank for grinding or farming, you will find that taking the damage yourself is quicker to deal with (drain does damage while healing instead of wasting time on funnel) and taking no damage (fear) beats all other options.

As for PVP your HP may come in handy but your lack of armor will hurt, but for both Demo and Fliction the last 2 tiers have some very useful talents for handling emergencies. Obviously Felguard has it's perks, and the usefulness of IHoT CANNOT be overexaggerated -- it is one of the best Lock spells in the game when on isntant timer. You are also looking at losing UA which can be devistating versus certain classes (and a decent little boost to DPS - 12-15% - on grind.)

There are so many classes in the game where there is no need to max out a certain tree, but honestly I don't think Locks are one of them. UA, Felguard, and Shadowfury are all dealbreakers in anything but the simplest of grinds.

If you're hellbent on using the VW, though, your build works wonders to grind with, only problem is you wont get a taste of it until 68... the only real benefit to the Fliction playstyle from this is ManaFeed (which is an amazing spell but like I said, wont get much of it if you go fliction first, and DP is better for Draining.)

See how it works for you, I'd recommend dropping your VW though, if you have any stats at all you wont need it.
