I read the sticky, and it says that ret pld essentially want to gear up like warriors with a splash of int.
That has me a bit confused, because overall, it seems all the 'ret pld' gear out there, has +dmg on it. Even the T4 ret pld set.
So yeah... what gives? Typical case of bad itemisation from Blizzard or do you actually need to strike somekind of balance?

Pretty much bad itemization. I think what they set up the Paladin to do according to the Ret tree, and what they wanted them to do according to the gear greatly conflict.
For instance, a Paladin still needs to stack +Hit rating in order to hit raid bosses. Also, Vengeance is designed with crits in mind, so we need to stack crit rating as well. The spelldamage coeffecients for our spells are not great and in some cases are non-existant and you get better damage just by stacking STR and AP.
