Hello first time poster short time reading look for advice from all you pallies out there!

I have a level 17 BE holy pally and I've been leveling with my boyfriend's affliction warlock of the same level so I have a few questions about my dps and gear and stuff.

Profile: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Kael%27thas&n=Miera

1) I'm pretty much the main healer and tank, so is holy an acceptable tree for this? Considering I plan on healing for instances and the like... but I do like tanking :D

2) what kind of gear should I aim for? I've been going for " ... of the gorilla" +int and +str

3) I use a mace + shield, should I stick with a shield or go two-handed for DPS?

I think thats about it for now o_o thanks for reading!

A'ight, gonna do my best to stick to the questions and not stray too far.

1- You don't really need to be Holy to heal instances until at *least* 50. As long as you carry a few extra pieces of gear with more +Int to fuel your heals, you should be fine. As for tanking, there are some key talents in Prot that really make it easier to keep threat, live longer, etc. I'd still consider Retro for the first levels until 40 or so, at which point it is generally agreed that Prot becomes great for soloing. (Since you can take on 3-6 mobs at the same time solo)

2- Well, it'll depend on the spec you choose. If you decide to remain Holy all the way, I'd suggest mostly +Sta/+Int both to live longer and fuel your abilities. Some +Str may help, but most of your damage should come from magic. (Judging SoR, etc) If you decide to go Retro, +Str/+Agi and some +Sta should do, much like a Warrior. And Prot should be +Sta/+Int as well, with some +Str for good measure. But frankly I think you'll be able to figure it out as you level. If your damage is mostly physical, Str/Agi. If it's mostly magical, Int/Stam.

3- Again, depends on the spec. With Retro you'll be using a two-handed sword. I recommend keeping a sword (mace) and shield for when you need to tank. With Prot it's definitely sword (mace) and shield. And Holy, I think I'd say two-hander until you get to the Outland and can find swords with +SpellDmg, but that's another story.

Not too sure myself what the Sticky contains, but I'm convinced there's a ton of info that could help further.

Since you already have dps really well covered with the warlock and you plan on healing while you're tanking, I would say holy is a really good choice. The talents that make your heals harder to interrupt are going to be important. You've already got righteous defense and righteous fury so you should be able to hold aggro pretty well, even better once you get Blessing of Salvation and can take a little of the aggro away from your warlock's dps. Oh, and don't forget to bless his pet as well. And getting Holy Shock will give you an excellent pull, although as a blood elf you already have one that works really well on anyone with mana. Retribution aura to give you some extra holy damage, and when you reach 22, you will probably be switching back and forth to Concentration for the heals.

As for gear, definitely +int. My second choice would be +sta for the extra hp or +spi to increase your mana regeneration. Of course, eventually you'll need to collect at least two sets of gear - +healing for your healing roles and +spell damage for your tanking roles, since such a large part of your aggro will be from spell damage. +Str for me is really low on the ladder - you're not gaining much threat or much damage from strength, all you get is a little improvement on your shield blocking.

You're going to want to keep the best 1H/shield combo and the best 2H weapon you can find for the appropriate situations. When you're facing casters, they don't really do much physical damage and there's not a lot of point in the shield. However, the way you've described your role as tank/healer for a 2-person group (3 with pet), you're probably going to want to use the shield most of the time and let the warlock handle the damage. The less you have to heal yourself, the more mana you'll have for your spells which will be doing your major damage and gaining your major threat. The 2H will also come in very handy when you end up facing PvP fights - there, the trick is to deal as much damage in as large a burst as possible.

Well, that's probably enough of my treatise - good luck and enjoy!

For what it's worth, you can rather easily heal instances (and BGs, for that matter) as Prot/Holy by taking care to beef up your healing gearset a bit. Look for good deals on the AH as you level up, choose quested healing pieces if nothing in the quest rewards suits your tanking set, and don't be afraid to take good cloth/leather healing pieces.

I've really found Prot/Holy to suit my interests. I enjoy tanking and healing, and a hybrid Prot/Holy build has allowed me to adequately do both up to my current level of 66.
