Hi guys,

My first post in this forum.

I have just finished the priest(ess) to take over some raid healing for the guild. Just hit Karazhan and while she heals great, I find i'm doing a lot of "overhealing" and burn my mana pool and tricks just before the end of the boss fights.
Any suggestions on gear or build changes to help my mana pool would be great.

This is not your first post on the forum, you made one back when you were in your 30's! :D

Ideally, mana pool won't be an issue - you'll get high enough regen that base mana isn't an issue. Seems like this will be more of an issue with ZA than anything else well into 25-mans.

The biggest boost would be grabbing tailoring and going for PMC + WM set, but if your guild is planning on moving onto ZA next patch, there's some stuff that's just slightly inferior and allows you to keep herb/alch. If ZA wasn't coming out, I'd definitely say grab tailoring instead of Alchemy then, and I'd still lean in that direction.

Head: Whitemend, or cheaper alternatives being Hallowed (Arc), Second Sight (Heroic Crypts), or the CE Revered helm. Get Revered with HH for the helm enchant.
Neck: The one you have is good, I'd stick with it till you get one of the Kara ones
Shoulder: Either get Royal Nightseye in them (more healing), or upgrade to Curator ones soon (more regen, and what I'd go with).
Back: One from Sethekk is a minor upgrade, I'd just wait for one of the Kara ones or start farming badges for the PvP one next patch (ever-so-slightly inferior to Prince cloak).
Chest: Hallowed definitely, and gemmed well. If you don't pick up tailoring, that'll last you till the ZA ones for sure (which, btw, are pure awesome).
Wrist: Farm badges for the 2.3 wrist, might not even be worth grabbing and enchanting the Maiden bracers.
Hands: The gloves from Botanica would be a (fairly minor) upgrade. I'd grab those and (once again) farm badges for the 2.3 gloves.
Waist: Get the one from heroic Slave Pens (higher regen) or heroics Durnholde (more stam and healing). If you've got gold to burn, consider getting one of the SSC/TK guilds to make you a Belt of the Long Road (I'd guess around 1500g). Probably easier to get it from Horde and have them throw it on the neutral AH, though I really don't know how Vox or other guilds charge or if they sell them even.
Legs: Whitemend. If you can get into a Doom Lord Kazzak run, there's an insanely good pair that drops from him, beats out WM with the set bonus and definitely without. Get the Golden Spellthread on either of them.
Feet: For regen get the ones from Shattered Halls, for raw +healing get the ones from Heroic Mech. Those will last you till Shade's really awesome ones.
Rings: The ones you have are good. I still prefer the BM quest ring (Keeper's Ring of Piety) over the Violet Eye one until you hit Revered/Exalted. Consider farming the honor for the Season 3 ring as well, it's very good even for raiding (and adds a fair chunk of stam).
Trinkets: Black Morass, heroic badges, or revered Lower City are all good. For a heavy-regen one, there's one from Heroic Mana-Tombs (though be warned that the first boss in a nightmare). There's a fairly good one coming in 2.3 either from Badges or lots of honor (identical except for name), but it lacks the +heal on use.

Weapon: Season 2 mace, or just hold out for the one from ZA. The one you have is good, and might not be worth getting the Maiden/Prince one and re-enchanting it if you think you'll get the Season 2 mace in the next few weeks.
Offhand: There's a really good one from badges now, and another good one coming with 2.3 that's badges as well. What I'd probably do, though, is farm Exalted CE, get the slightly-inferior offhand from that, and save up all those badges you just got for all the 2.3 items. The offhands from Arc or heroic Slave Pens are good in-betweens.
Wand: While it should probably be the last on your list of things to get with all those badges, the new damage wand gemmed with a Royal Nightseye is, sadly enough, the best wand till well into SSC. It's so incredibly marginal over what you have, though, that I'd ignore that.

Conclusions about gear:
Whitemend is biggest and easiest upgrade. I'd suggest farming Exalted with CE for badges and the offhand, and revered with HH and LC (and Sha'tar by default of Mech being really easy to badge farm), snagging as many items as you can along the way while you farm the crap out of heroics for badges.

Spec: I'd drop one point from Silent Resolve and one from Empowered Healing to grab Improved DS. It's a fairly big buff to the raid if you've got many casters at all.

Healing tips: Keep renew and PoM on the tank as much as possible. If PoM pops back to you, you can (very, very carefully) Rank1 SW:Death it back to the tank. Use Gheal primarily if you can, starting a cast and canceling it about 1.5sec into the cast if it doesn't look like the tank will need it. PoM is godlike on Maiden, Curator, and Netherspite.

Well your build looks pretty good for a holy priest; no real mistakes. One thing you might consider is trying to get Improved Divine Spirit, you might as well if you're going to put that many points in disc. Imp DS will help you with +healing greatly, and every mana-user in the raid will love you, I promise. In terms of blowing your mana too quickly, one thing you should try to do is use lower, slower ranked healing spells, like lower ranks of g-heal and even Heal. They don't heal for as much, but a rank 1 g-heal heals a little more than rank 9 Flash Heal, and costs significantly less mana, the only difference is the casting time. Obviously you wouldn't use a slow heal on a mage or an AoE-er who is in dire need of healing, but for MT or OT healing, or controlled situations, use g-heals. Also use Renew on controlled situations. Renew heals for a ton, and costs less than a Flash or something, not to mention all the talents to improve it (Imp Renew, Mental Agility).

If all this fails, you could try to boost your mana pool by speccing deeper into the Disc tree and getting Mental Strength. You can also be a mp5/sec ***** and regen a ton of mana, that'll help too. Just remember the more +healing you have the lower ranks of spells you can use.

Also when you're in Karazhan, you'll likely have 2-3 other healers in the party with you, and it is likely that they are snagging the heals before you do. If this is the case, just keep "checking" your casts; meaningn start the cast, and then be ready to cancel it if you notice the target's health restored already. Healing is about timing, and trusting your other healers to know what they're doing as well. If you're into mods, "Forecast" is a good one; tells you what spells are being cast on your target so you don't get stuck with an overhealing spell. The thing I find most helpful is my UI mod called Perl Classic Unit Frames. There are several types of unit frame mods that will display your party members' MISSING HP, so you know EXACTLY how much you need to heal them for. I'd say that feature has helped me the most in healing efficienty.

My last note is to remind you that you're just starting out raiding, your gear isn't purple and matching and shiny yet. There is always the possibility that you just don't have the best gear yet for certain, harder fights. But if you follow what I have said before, you'll be a good healer, and you'll get the loot in no time. Healing is 90% awareness and paying attention, and 10% gear.

Hope this helps. Again your spec doesn't seem to be an issue-maybe go for ALL the mana-reducing talents and try that out.

Most of the mana reg will come out of mp5-items.

Anyway, to the over-healing part. You shouldnt really worry about overhealing. If you beat the boss it really matters zero if you overhealed 0% or 50%. Specially when you go with a new group into raids you may want to toss that extra heal here an there to keep things safe, no matter which numbers some statistc tool add ons show.

For your build. Hmm, if you go that deep into holy then i would finish the holy tree to CoH because its a pretty awesome group healing talent which can be quite handy for 25´s.

For now i would really cancell 2 holy points and put them into imp. divine spirit. You have aready +25% of spirit to your healing spells so get that extra 10% as well. With those points spirit actually becomes a very powerful stat for holy priests. Then again its enough if one priest of your raid has that talent and i dont know the situation of your raid.

Plus you didnt really give information which role you have in your raid (MT healer, group healer), but if you havent done it yet try out to downrank your gheals. It reduces overhealing also a lot.

Other than improved devine spirit, you just need some more +healing and of course any more mana regen is great.

Personally, as a holy priest, I would keep Alchemy. You shouldn't walk into kara without mana pots (I always make sure I have MORE than enough). I also like to buff up with [wowitem=22853]Flask of Mighty Restoration[/wowitem] and [wowitem=27666]Golden Fish Sticks[/wowitem] (fishing and cooking FTW).

When I took up tailoring for my Primal Mooncloth and Whitemend set, I moved my herbalism over to my hunter. It was easy enough to level back up, and I wasn't about to lose my Potion Mastry on my priest.
