Deadly Poison and Combat?Follow

I've recently begun wondering if Deadly Poison is of any use to a Combat rogue over Instant Poison (or any other poisons for that matter). I tend to simply throw whatever I have more of onto my blades and I just felt I needed to ask.

I ran around for a while using the two poisons separately (one session with Deadly Poison on both of my weapons, the next session using Instant Poison) and on average I was looking at a good increase in DPS from Instant Poison compared to Deadly Poison.

DPS:
Instant | Deadly
423 | 396

I'm aware that Deadly Poison breaks things like gouge and blind making a mid-combat bandage difficult, which makes using it even less appealing. It would seem it's only real place is against other rogues (especially when they pop Vanish and/or Evasion) but I can't really see it being too useful otherwise. I'm also aware that the damage of mutilate is increased against poisoned targets.

I guess my real question is: are there any situations where using deadly poison would be favorable over instant poison?

Oh! And are there any rogues that can clarify if a DPS of 423 is good for a 67 rogue? I tend to top the meters in groups and I don't get to group with other rogues often enough to figure out where I should be.

Good for what? It takes too long to apply and stack to have any real effect on leveling 5-mans or soloing, plus it limits your options. In a sustained damage fight (i.e. raiding, or bosses in instances) it'll outpace Instant Poison just because a fully stacked Deadly Poison hits... pretty hard. It'll be 75 DPS once it gets to a 5-stack and stay there, which is a lot better than you'll see from Instant Poison.

instant in a 10 second fight with a 65 mob while your grinding, yes use instant

5 minute boss fight where theres a good chance hes immune to instant? use deadly in raids or instances

instant for fights under 30 seconds in pve
deadly for instances or raids
sharpening stones in pve when poisons arent an option
wound/crip in pvp, no other choices are allowed hehe

There are bosses immune to Instant Poison but _not_ Deadly Poison?

As mentionned, Deadly Poison is as a good choice on any fight where it'll get to a 5stacks and tick a few times. This include a lot of boss fights, but it's a relatively usless poison to use while grinding or even on trash mobs in instances.

There's also little point in using dual DP. Even on long fight. Use DP MH and IP OH. This will net you the best dps from your poison on a prolonged fight.

In pvp, Crippling and Wound are usually used (And both work for mutilate).

That being said, if you're in a duel againt a class that doesn't heal (i.e. Warrior, Rogue, Mage, Hunter and Warlock since wound poison doesn't do anything to drain yet), Deadly Poison is an adequate replacement to Wound Poison.

Deadly Poison is especially effective against Warriors in 1v1, since Envenom can really bring them to their knees.

Thanks for your input and I'd also like to thank you for answering a question I forgot to ask. I never really understood the purpose of the Envenom skill until you made me think about the heavily armored classes.

@RPzip

i always rememebr before BC came out never seeing instant proc, but seeing deadly stack up as a debuff slot

Better question is are you gonna have a debuff available to you to be using Deadly, or take Windfury over poisons in general? Stuff to consider before you go slapping DPs every time in raids.

If you have access to windfury totem, then you use WF MH and DP OH.
