Hello

As a newcomer to WoW and the warlock class I'm interested in knowing if Inferno's and doom guards are worth using? Are they good for PVP or PVE?

Regards,
Chris :)

In a word, no.

The Infernal will turn against you, I think it's about 5 minutes, and you have to re-enslave him. If that fails, which w/o the talents improving it, and even then, it probably will, then your dead.

The Doom Guard suffers the same problem, once you get him out you have to keep him enlaved, and it just doesn't happen.

Basically they are novelty pets that you can have some fun with sometimes, but overall, not very useful.

Are they powerful? I'm about to hit level 50 and I will get the inferno. If it can kill me is there any chance it can take on a mage/priest/shaman or any of the other classes?

Yes man,you summon inferno on some poor alli/horde ,they'll be stunned then attacked by giant inferno, that better works in world pvp ,but its situational and used mostly for fun.

WTF effect for sure !

The main points of the inferno aren't the demon itself.. it's the short cast AoE stun, followed by an AoE fire shield demon that's tough to kill anyway.

It has its uses, like in certain quests that are not normally soloable but you can't find a group for, and it's fun to use in a BG on a mass of enemies. It once managed to stun and distract a group of allies long enough to capture the stables in AV to win by 5-cap.

Doomguard though, is almost useless. The curse of doom makes for nice damage on bosses and long battles, but it has such a low proc rate. That, plus the demon's high shadow resist and the diminishing returns on enslave tends to make you not have a doomguard very often, even if you're really trying.

The ritual of doom is a bit better, but it's hard to get, and has a chance to kill you. You'd need two locks in your party to make sure someone enslaves him.

They're very situational pets.. I personally like casting Inferno more for the stun and damage, right after Shadowfury. A nice 4 second AoE stun, 1500 non-crit damage, and a fire shielded demon.. makes for mad allies.

Go ahead and get Inferno, it's a decent spell and the quest chain's worthwhile to do for the XP alone. I don't PvP myself, but I've heard many, many stories about how awesome the AoE stun is, and it can be pretty cool to let the Infernal loose in a crowd...

I've never bothered getting Ritual of Doom, and I probably never will. It's not necessary, it's not useful. (I've also never purchased any of the Firestone spells, as I'd never use 'em either) If you want a big-uber-pet-'o-doom, spec Demonology for the Felguard.

I never got the doomguard pet, either, because it is so messed up. Guaranteed to kill 1 party member at random, and it could be you which means you just died and chances are another party member or two will die as well by the hands of the big demon you just summoned. I have summoned doomguards from curse of doom several times but, again, they appear at the end of a battle where you're likely to be injured or low on mana, you have to enslave them (and good chance it gets resisted, or you waste time debuffing his shadow resist), and then it's nearly guaranteed to break at the worst possible moment. Blearg.

The infernal has definitely seen some use, though. I've used it in pve situations to clear out campsites of mobs, and I've used it in pvp against large groups of allies. Like the others said, the aoe stun is nice, and it has a good damage shield. The bad part is once you use it, you can't summon another one for 1 hour. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted, right? :)
