Guns..where to get a good one ?Follow

#1 Nov 04 2007 at 12:04 PM Rating: Default
My lvl 34 hunter went to Iron Forge (which I thought was the best place) to get a new gun. My present gun only does 7.1 dps, but the highest dps gun they sell there is only 7.1 dps. Where can I purchase a decent gun ?
Thanks

Try the Auction House (or did you?).

Quest. In STV from Hemmet Nessingwary, Jr., there is a quest series. It's long, and you'll need help to finish it. But it gives you quite a good gun or bow.

Or get 20-30 wsg marks and however much honor is required to buy one. Alliance goes to silv. sent base in ashenvale to buy - horde goes to honor stand in north barrens to buy. Nice bow - you could build up the skill very quickly.

My 29 dwarf hunter has a CHesterfall Musket which he bought on the AH. Look it up. GL

In addition to the previous response. You really dont need to worry much about the quality of your weapons when leveling. Just go with what you can find and worry about what to get when you hit 70. Also just a bit of a warning, you may be subject to some flames here in the next few posts as this is one of the "asked 1 billion times questions". so just a heads up

And never buy weapons or armour from vendors. Ever.
Use what you get as quest rewards, in instances or just random drops. Anything that is an upgrade compared to what you're currently using. Don't spend too much in the auction house while leveling, you'll need the cash later.

Actually no it is not, please go bother somebody else.

Go to www.wowhead.com

Hit the Browse button above the search bar

Navigate to Weapons > Guns

Hit Create a filter

Then under REQUIRED Level (not Item Level) Type in 28 (min) 34 (max), that should give you a decent amount of guns to browse through, and it will even tell you were they drop from.

Wow, lvl 34 and still buying vendor guns!? Actually, I think I'm pretty impressed that you've made it this far. Wowhead is definitely a good way to go for this kind of info. I'm guessing things will get a bit easier for you here pretty quickly. Good Luck!

Eh, the weapon determines how quickly you kill a mob. You could be 34 and still be slinging around a level 10 ranged bow and be able to solo. Where you'd totally suck would be instancing... any groups would hate you.

It isn't until the upper levels 50+ that you really need to start worrying about being much more efficient.

I fumbled through my first 40 levels with Thalika... much better now. Had to L2P or quit... ^_^

(Edit: sucky spelling and really sucky grammar. English should be my 3rd language but sadly, it's my first...)

I wouldn't claim that publicly- so you could get away with it :)

I agree with Sloshot. I see this entirely too much on here. Concerned about upgrading weapons at 12? Don't. 22? Don't. 34? Yea don't. Don't worry about it. Use wowhead and you can get decent enough stuff from quests (it'll tell you which quest to do). With my horde hunter I went into 1 instance, 1 time, got 3 upgrades, and still have them. (went at 51). Otherwise, I plan my quests so that I get an upgrade when I need an upgrade. Think I actually just did upgrade...

Ok, I guess I've been tricked into the routine of buying greens off AH periodically, but I usually try to make it a worthwhile upgrade.

Here's a separate but related question:

For a while I was using a Sniper Rifle, don't remember what kind of modifier it had, Eagle or Falcon, maybe? Anyway, typical damage per shot was around 130-150.

I just recently bought a Percussion Shotgun again, not sure what the stat bonuses are, but that's not the point, and am now typically seeing damage per shot of around 100-120.

Granted I'm not a WoW hunter math wiz. Frankly I couldn't follow the sticky with all the math calcs, but my question is, What gives? These two guns have similar top-end damage numbers in their tool-tips, so why am I routinely seeing 10-30 points less damage now? Sadly I don't have a damage meter to compare DPS with, but I do get the feeling that it has increased appropriately given the difference of nearly 4 DPS from the sniper to the shotgun.

Your damage difference is told by the speed of the weapon. The shotgun fires faster and does similar dps. That means it has to do less damage per shot. No calculus here.

DAMAGE PER SECOND = dps

So if one fires every 2.3 seconds and one every 3.0 seconds yet they are the same dps (lets assume 100 dps here for easy math) you get damage per SHOT of:

100*2.3=230 damage per round
-or-
100*3.0=300 damage per round

See, easy math. That is why the shotgun does less per shot, it fires faster.

Wait wait wait.

Never buy off the AH? Never?

That's silly. Okay, if you're a spendaholic and need to be told NEVER SPEND to have a prayer of curbing your urges, fine. Questing for gear is really good. But sometimes it's a huge pain.

But if you can find a really decent item that will vastly help you for 50 silver, buy it!

I wonder if hunters saying "never buy on the AH" are the same hunters who go LW/skinning? They never have money cuz they thing they get that they could sell for extra money (skins) gets fed in the money hole of their other profession (LW), which results in negative profits for most (people I know, a few can make it pay).

If you have gathering skills, like mining/skinning or herb/skinning, and if you regularly sell for smart prices on the AH, you'll have plenty of money to pick up the occasional "deal" on the AH. My advice is to only spend when it makes a big difference in the quality of your play, and only buy when you can get a deal.

What you want to avoid doing is constantly buying a "Leather Ballet Tutu of the Monkey" to replace your "King of the Dance Kilt of the Monkey" because the old one is +3 sta +4 agi and the new one is +4 sta +4 agi. That little blip up is nothing.

But if you're using a 5.1 dps gun or bow, and there is an 11.2 dps gun or bow on the AH for under a gold (or even a little over a gold - and often there are deals like this, you have to look) - hell, buy it! That will make a huge difference!

And you do need to save for your mount at 40! If you have spending issues, consider making a "banker" alt. Mail him mount money. ANd never ever EVER break his piggy bank for anything except the mount! Be disciplined.

Oh, if you have a 70 alt who can do daily quests, say - for goodness sakes, chuck all this nonsense out the window and buy some cool stuff for your hunter! Live a little! You don't have to spend 150g on a Hurricane, if you're just going to blow through the lvls (and make the bow obsolete in 2 weeks). Just use good sense.

Keep in mind: time is money. If you could spend 4 hours getting one bow or twenty minutes having your seventy farm the gold for an AH-bought equivalent - which is smarter?

I think I have to agree with Iponemagirl. It really depends a bit on your play style and all that as to the rules for using AH. I'm in a position where I usually only have about an hour at a time to play and I almost never have the option to play during "prime time". If I didn't upgrade through AH, I'd be running around with a bunch of grays, whites and maybe a handful of greens with weird stats 'cause I hadn't been able to find anything better. Either that or my lvl 49 hunter would be outfitted with a bunch of lvl 20-ish blues and greens as the result of the few times I've been able to farm a low-lvl instance solo.

Oh, and the idea that you can get everything you need from quests is a joke! There are a lot of quests that don't even have hunter-appropriate rewards! "Here you go, you're reward is a wand or a shield, take your pick. Or maybe you'd prefer some plate?"

I know, you can't always get what you want, but I figure the AH is there for a reason and I take advantage of that. I may not have tons of gold, but I feel like I'm fairly well equiped and as a result can hold my own without being laughed at by the folks that can spend 5 hours a day running instances and BGs for the "phat lewt".

Sorry for the rant. I'm done now.
