New mage finally quit EQFollow

#1 Nov 04 2007 at 10:48 AM Rating: Decent
Just quit EQ after 8 years. My server was dead (Firiona Vie) and the Devs didnt give a rats *** about either closing it or allowing transfers so I just transfered. Had 4 epic mages during my EQ time (they arent that hard to do) and I know they are totally different here and much more like wizzies but I figured I would give them a try since I like blowing things up.

Just had a question about all this AoE grinding stuff. I don't need any links since they are all bookmarked and I have downloaded both "The Art of Grinding" and "In Frost We Trust" but I keep hearing about some nerf. I cant ever find anything that says what it is other than decreased damage with 10 or more mobs or something like that. Can someone tell me exactly what was nerfed or if anything at all and is this still a viable way to get exp. I know they are making quests better in 2.3 but it still seems like it would be a good way for a new player to make money really fast once I get the hang of it.

That would be the AoE Damage Cap.

To use fictitious spells and damage, let's say you had an Area-of-Effect spell that does a flat 1000 damage.

If you hit one enemy with that spell, you will do 1000 damage to 1 enemy for a total of 1000 damage.
If you hit two enemies with that spell, you will do 1000 damage to 2 enemies for a total of 2000 damage.
If you hit three enemies with that spell, you will do 1000 damage to 3 enemies for a total of 3000 damage.
If you hit eight enemies with that spell, you will do 1000 damage to 8 enemies for a total of 8000 damage.

And so on.

With the introduction of AoE Damage Caps, each spell has its own total damage limit. If this fictional spell has a damage cap of 8000:

If you hit seven enemies with that spell, you will do 1000 damage to 7 enemies for a total of 7000 damage.
If you hit eight enemies with that spell, you will do 1000 damage to 8 enemies for a total of 8000 damage.
If you hit nine enemies with that spell, you will do 888.9 damage to 9 enemies for a total of 8000 damage.

If you hit ten enemies, 800 damage on each enemy instead of 1000.
If you hit 20 enemies, 400 damage on each enemies instead of 1000.

Sucks, doesn't it?

So basically as long as I keep my pulls to like 9 mobs then Im good? Or can I still do like 30 at a time like in the videos. I watched one pally do like 30 mobs and it was pretty sweet and Im guessing we can do the same. Also since I just started I picked up mining/skinning will those make me decent money cause right now I cant afford new spells or bags and all mine are full or ore/leather with no room for any other loot.

It's not the number of mobs, it's the amount of damage. You hear "10 or more mobs" often because that's not far-fetched as the number of mobs before people hit the damage cap. As a level 70 fire mage with +450 spell damage, I can't even do ~40 mobs in Ragefire Chasm, the lowest-level instance (enemies around level 12-15). My Blast Wave AoE Spell which normally does about 850-950 damage on an enemy ends up doing about 150 per enemy with so many mobs stretching the damage cap.

AoE Frost Grinding is still viable, just not the way that you saw on "Even Stupider Mage Tricks" or something.

So basically if one day for fun I want to take out all of say Scarlet Monestary in 1 pull then a Pally would be a better choice? Im just trying to find a class that I can level to 70 the fastest and AoEing just seemed like the right way. I tried a hunter but it was basically me watching TV hitting 2 buttons. If people say grinding is so boring how the hell can anyone lvl a hunter? I know things change once u start raiding but theres no way I was going any longer playing a char where I hit one macro that did hunters mark, sent pet, then started shooting. I want at least some challenge leveling then one day have a character thats wanted in Instances and can farm like no other. Also I despised necros so no Lock for me since they seem like 95% the same.
