We're talking in the context of 10 or 25-man raids. In which case, shammies will never be main tank healers. Pallies and druids are better at taking the edge off bit hits, and priests have a damn good single-target heal. A shammy's group heals are far too powerful to waste of having them main healing in raids.
Haha, we just ran Kara with nine people up to Moroes with me wearing hybrid dps/healing gear with a discipline spec and we didn't wipe at all.
The other healers were a pally and a druid.
The pyro mage survived the AoE pulls before Moroes and Maiden because of improved shields and Pain Suppression.
It overall just made the raid go more smoothly, I'm highly amused with the results.

We did Kara with an enhancement shammy as one of the healers. Great boost to melee DPS from the stronger attacks, he put out decent dps on trash, and when he ran out of mana on bosses he just equipped his enhance weapons and popped Shamanistic Rage and meleed for a few seconds :D
