Hunter DPSFollow

I rolled a hunter a couple months ago cuz i was tired of tanking with my warrior, so I'm kinda noobish when it comes to hunters. Anyway, I am level 62 BM and have 185 DPS unbuffed, and I'm still using my Precisely Calibrated Boomstick, I want to get a new ranged weapon, but every one that I get gives me less DPS (on average, I'd say 7 less DPS than the Boomstick). I put the same scope and ammo with the weapon, but to no avail. Is the Precisely Calibrated Boomstick just that awesome of a weapon, or am I missing something.

Well, there are a few things to consider... so I'll do my best to explain.

The boomstick is a great weapon for the level, but there are certainly better ones by your level. The agility on the boomstick is nice, which is why you may be seeing a decrease if you're going to a weapon without any.

However, another thing to consider is your weapon skill. As an example, if you're going to a bow and you haven't used bows since level 25, your DPS is going to be lower because your weapon skill is much lower.

One last thing to consider is that the boomstick is REALLY fast, so that means small, soft hits frequently. With a slower weapon and higher top weapon damage, your specials will hit a lot harder (eg steady shot, arcane, etc). So... even if your tooltip DPS is a bit lower, it may, in fact, not be. What have you been using instead? That may help us more.

and to add to Zul's comment about weapon skill, you'll gain a bit of crit for every weapon skill point you gain. So if you have a bow or crossbow that SHOULD be giving you better DPS, just use it for a bit, and you'll slowly see that you'll hit more and crit more with it. At level 62, you can get a bow called Splintermark with the PvP tokens from Hellfire. You buy the bow in Zangermarsh, and it is a huge upgrade to the gun.

This was such a noob mistake, i hate to admit I've been playing WOW for more than a year and a half. What you recommended worked, i just got my bow and crossbow levels up to par with my gun level, and viola! I got +14 DPS from a green quest reward bow LOL. My DPS is up to 201 now, thanks a million.

I think all the participants in the 'Get to level 25' thread should read this one. Courtesy, helpfulness and a generally friendly attitude = everyone goes home happy.

Hurrah!

Glad to see your problem was resolved smackchumps :)

Now, if only levelling lowbie pets was as quick as getting weapon skills up ...

Hey Mothheart, as correct as your statement is, I as the OP of that thread do need to say one thing....

Little comments like that are unnecessary and only provoke people, so keep them to yourself. Also, if you did read that thread, the last post I made addressed lurkers and those with little to no posts such as yourself. I said that, although you may have the right to post anything you like and everyone has the right to ignore or read it, nobody will take you seriously and most likely only become offended when you try and judge anyone on the forums.

Continue posting and get a good reputation on these forums (not karma, you can be reputable yet unliked.) Not meaning to be mean if I come across that way, just saying your post was not necessary and only served in derailing it, so congrats on derailing your first thread. =D

The gun I have on my character is available at your level. Check out the armory linky below...

It's getting a bit long in the tooth for my level but it's lasted me this far, so it's still a viable weapon for me. Looking for something better, may end up waiting unti 70...

I should note that the tooltip DPS will be the same if your weapon skill is 1 or if it is 350. What changes is the hit and crit chance you get. So if you're just basing it on your tooltip DPS, you're going to get a good idea pre-skillups.

Also, the boomstick aint great for weaving in steady shots. At a 1.5 base speed, you would be reducing your white DPS by 33% if you weave in steady shots, since the base steady shot cast time is 1.5, which would shoot the AS into a 2.0 attack speed.

I myself Got Splintermark from Zangarmarsh and used it almost to lvl 70, until I got Hemets Elekk Gun, then at 70 got the Valanos Longbow. Go withthe weapon that gives you the highest tooltip DPS, but try not to get weapons that have really fast attack speeds, but I don't think there are any at that level anyway. You'll get the skill-ups to make your actual DPS match the tooltip DPS eventually if yuo don't already and once you get higher level your DPS starts to really climb as all the gear has lots of AP on it.

Can you skill up (gun, bow, crossbow or whatever) when you are fighting in BGs ?

As long as a shot leaves your ranged weapon and there are skill points to be gained, it works.

This is not true, you can not skill up weapons in bgs, or arena, because in a bg your weapon skill is maxed.
