#1 Nov 02 2007 at 6:10 AM Rating: Decent
i just created an undead priest on daggerspine. im only level 4 atm but with a few hours of playing i can get it to abotu 15 easy. my problem is i don't know what kind of priest would be best for me. my friends and i are going to create a raid or pvp guild, i was thinking of going as a shadow priest but im not 100% sure. also i have no idea what kind of armor i would need or what kind of weapons would be best. if someone could give me a hand and maybe even give me a few tips on what to get and what not to get on the talent tree i would be very greatgul for the help.

Start by reading the FAQ's at the top of this page. Look at other resources like Shadowpriest.com and wowwiki for some lore and class information.

Shadow is the easiest leveling build. By that I mean it's the fastest, but it is in no way the only one. If you're going to be playing with friends a lot, a holy build is very viable and possibly more useful than a shadow one. If you wanted to be different you could go the discipline road.

Ultimately, it's up to you. Try a shadow build and a holy build and see which one you like better. Just remember, your build isn't going to make a huge difference at such a low level like 15. It really doesn't start coming into it's own till 20-25.

So shadow talents:

Lvl 10-14: 5/5 Spirit Tap
15-16: 2/2 Improved Shadow Word Death
17-19: 3/5 Shadow Focus
20: Mind Flay
21-24: 4/5 Improved Mind Blast
25-26: 2/2 Shadow Reach
27-29: 3/5 Shadow Weaving (for now, will go up to 5/5 later)

Something Like that is a good start. You can totally tweak it and switch some talents around. But those are the most useful at a lower level. Make sure to build it around getting Shadow Form at 40.

And remember, respecs will happen. They are a good thing. They let you try out which builds you like and which ones work for you. They do get expensive though, so try not to do it too much.

I would even go so far to say a shadow build is the most powerful all around priest build at any level before 70. At 70 every raider needs to specialize. A priest will need to be a healer or dps and thus spec holy/disc or shadow.

At any time before that a shadow priest can swap out to level appropriate healing gear and heal instances with little problem. You will find that running with a guild or static group will make those instances go very smooth.

As Schmere said a shadow build is the fastest leveling build. Leveling is all about XP and the vast majority of XP comes from killing mobs. The faster you can kill mobs the faster you level. Shadow has all the priest's tools to kill mobs faster and before the end game does not gimp your healing enough to matter to your instancing with friends.

so becoming a shadow priest doesnt effect my healing too much right?? if that's so then i'll most likely do that so that i may level fast and be able to heal well.

You'll be able to heal just fine until you get to around level 60 or so when you hit the Outlands instances. Your healing will not be as good as if you were holy, but you CAN heal and heal well.

Since you said that you're starting a raid/pvp guild, you may want to consider collecting some +healing gear to put to use just in case you're called on to heal.

You'll also want to look for +int/+sta gear for your mana pool and survivability.

Start out with int spirit and sta. +healing and +shadow or +spell dmg isn't a huge difference before lvl 50-70. You'll do better with a bigger mana pool than + gear.

If you're on a pvp server go for int and sta. If you're on a pve then go mainly for int and then sta and spirit about equally.
