Hi all,

I reactivated my account yesterday after a 6 month break and I was looking for some advice. I'm currently level 70 MM spec hunter with decent-ish gear (mostly blues). I was hoping I could get some suggestions.

First, I'm currently not in a raiding guild and I dont plan on getting in one for a while. Understanding that, what is my best bet to start getting gear? Running heroic instances with PuGs (assuming I have the rep for it)? Or should I grind PvP for gear that way?

Second, have they done anything to really mess up MM spec? When I left, MM was the best raiding/instance spec and it still had a decent ability to solo.

Third, when I was playing, grinding water elementals for their motes was the best way to make money but I think I read they changed mote drops in a patch a while back. I have skinning so should I just stick to farming leather and selling it on the AH?

Thanks for any help,

You'll get a lot of "Go BM" responses, just to warn you.

Beast Mastery has unfortunately over-stepped marksman for top DPS, but I've never been able to get used to it. Marksman is still a decent spec and is good for arena, etc... which I'd definitely reccomend doing to get some upgrades (although I've been lazy and haven't done it myself). Other than that, heroics are a good way to start getting some better gear :)

I'm not sure about the skinning versus farming motes thing, but I can tell you that on my server (PVP) I don't really even think too much about farming them... lol. I am a skinner/LW, and knothide/heavy knothide still seem to sell decently well.

If you were planning on raiding, I'd tell you to go SV or BM.... but if you're doing solo, arena, and some 5-mans, for the love of pete do what you enjoy and stay marksman (that is, unless you like BM better). You'll still do good damage, have good solo capability, and do well in PVP (scatter and silence ftw!).

Anyway, I hope this helps!

was in more or less the same situation as you(came back 3-4weeks ago after 6month)

after i week a changed to BM and im loving it, really didnt think i would.
so might be worth a thought atleast, obiously you should stick with what you enjoy the most tho.

as for farming motes id say if oyu find a spot to do it, then go for it, usualy kinda hard to find a spot where youl be alone.
skinning works but other gathering proffestions is usualy better, like mining, with prospecting in the game ore really goes like butter in the sun.

as stated above aswell, pvp is a good and relativly fast way to upgrade gear, if you like pvp, also there are quite a few nice crafted things you could look for.

Heroic PUGs are better than normal PUGs, and that's not a bad way to get gear. As mentioned earlier, running PvP battlegrounds (and arena) can yield some good gear.

If you like MM, stick with it--it's probably better for 5-mans anyway because of the trap bonuses you'll get with SV on the side. If you move up to start running Karazhan, consider switching to BM.

I don't know much about the Primal Water market, but if you decide to skin for money, stick with Cobra Scales and Thick Clefthoof Leather. Knothide, in any form, is flooded and undercut on a regular basis, especially on the weekends (at least on my server).

Thanks for the responses. I was BM spec as I leveled up then I changed to MM because I thought I was gona start raiding. I'll mess around with some builds and see what I come up with.

I think I'll start grinding rep to get heroic keys and do PvP when I get bored. A friend said they might make season 1 arena gear able to get with normal PvP points in the 2.3 patch so that might be something to save up for.

One more question. For gear I was focusing on Agi as the main stat to look for in gear. Should I change this and go for a more balance of Agi and Stam or am I completely off target?

Thanks again,

If you have a decent crit rate, (not sure, but 20% should be good for heroics) then trade some agility for AP.

I love BM. Started into that tree at level 10, and stuck with my Ghost Saber since level 19. I always thought i would be gimped dps compared to MM, but turns out i'm not! Thing is, hunters aren't the best at dps anyway. Grab Clever Traps from SV and use Silencing Shot and your groups will love you more than the top dps in the group anyway.

You can get the Beast Lord set pretty easy to practice your CC and dps techniques before you start the heroics, or there's plenty of other gear out there, so run what you like while finding out who you like, and enjoy pvp on the side. S2 xbow is a nice goal to shoot for :D

its more or less the same as before, go for a mix of agi and AP.
ofc for the pvp some stamina doesnt hurt either :P

oh and for some easy cash you now have daily quest aswell, in skettis and blades edge.

You say you have mostly blues, does it mean the rest are purplez or greens?
What kind of your blues are? My level 69 hunter girl is in blues mostly too but they are from some lower level instances and quest rewards, I certainly plan to run normal SV and SL untill I get better blues and maybe craft few epixs.

I would say run some normal 5 mans first, for gear, rep and to get a grip of playing back. Heroics are not that easy you know.

As far as money making goes, what kind of elementals did you have in mind? Those on Elemental Plateau still have decent drop rate, but level 60somethings dont.
It depends a lot if your server is overcamped on certain places too.
Personally, I fish on my lock. I manage to catch 2x6 pools spawns usually, and I get some nice buff food for hunter and for sale. With killing the nearest elementals in between I manage 7-8 water primals in some hour and half.
I dont sell them tho, I make them into earthstorm diamonds with alchemy on lock and then in +12 int meta gems with JC on hunter - I get much more profit that way.

Money making depends a lot on what you other prof is.

As someone mentioned you can do dailies, but mind that you need group to unlock Ogrila ones, and if you are undergeared you might find dailies a pita.
Of course for all mentioned you need flying mount, which I assume you have :)

Here is my armory page Sethy: link.

By mostly blues I really meant all but 1 blue.

As of last night I'm almost keyed for Kara (just need BM). I got 2 friends in a raiding guild and they said if there was a DPS spot open I could go with them and see how I do. With any luck I'll be able to get the Steel Hawk X-Bow. I think I'm gona run SL next weekend to try to get the Sonic Spear. From what I remember that was about the best melee weapon for a hunter in the game (and I got an enchanter that will give me max agi for free).

I'm gona stay with MM for a little bit longer and see how it goes then I might make a BM build to see what I like best.

Thanks again,

Your gear's definitely looking pretty decent. One thing I noticed is that you're a bit low on the AP side for the gear you have (no offense intended). I would probably pick up assault to bracers (Only about 5g on my sever for 24 AP) and the same for gloves (another 26 AP, relatively cheap).

Once you get the sonic, if you're staying MM or BM I'd reccomend savagery instead, but that's up to you as well :) You want to build some hurting bombs as a MM spec, so try to focus on your AP a bit more :)

EDIT: Also, you'll probably want to throw a cobrascale armor kit on the legs as I see you're a LW as well.

Thanks Zul.

Now that I look at it savagery would be a better enchant.

I do have a question about the AP vs Agi. The sticky at the top of the fourm and everything I remember says that 1 Agi = 1 AP + Crit%, so a pice of armor's Agi + AP would have to be better then my current for me to consider changeing it out. A pice with 20 agi vs a pice with 20 AP, the Agi pice would win because it would also give a bit more Crit. Unless they changed some of the skills we use to give bonus dammage from AP.

It's true, you do get AP + crit (and actually armor) from agi.

However, most pieces you will find will have a good bit more AP (read: double). Equal AP to equal AGI, always go for the agi... but the simple fact is that as a BM or MM you want to build AP as opposed to crit because it also scales with your pet. For survival, it's all about the crit % to get expose weakness, and though you want to have a good amount of crit as BM or MM, it's more like 20% instead of 30% :)

I hope that helps! I kind of feel like that paragraph was a wall of text... but I'm tired. LOL.

unless im way off here, 1agi=1ap BUT
1agi~2ap for total dps

so for gems, 8agi and 16ap has about the same effect on increased DPS, you just have to decide if you need ap or crit more, also for raiding agi goes ontop since it scales with blessing of kings.

so for checking DPS on items i usualy double the agi and add the ap then compare, or more often i just use the spreadsheet here http://forums.tkasomething.com/showthread.php?t=8616

Nothing has changed to "mess up" MM but it hasn't been the best raiding spec since BC came out. Perhaps early on people just didn't know.
