Ok, so I'm still getting the hang of chain trapping in tough situations (No warning on pull, or accidentally breaking my own trap >.<)

I've got 17 points in survival, getting me through the main trap bonuses, and then 41/3 in Bm/Mm.

I've played BM since lvl 50 something, and I was survival before that.

Should I go back to survival? BM has been nice, especially with Beastial Wrath, but my pet's dying from boss AOE in heroics, and I'm starting to think I might be more useful as a survival/cc hunter.

Any thoughts? Has anyone made this switch?

It seems you know what you're doing to some extent, so i shouldn't have to get too detailed. You don't have to be SV or MM to be good in raids/heriocs (which i'm assuming is what you need help deciding with). If you're quick enough and know what you're doing, you can pull out your pet before it dies from AOEs and if not, hell that's what imp. revive pet is for.

And about chain trapping, you don't NEED to be in SV tree to be able to chain trap well, although it helps. Just grab a couple pieces of the Beast Lord set and get the 4 second trap bonus and you should do fine. Hell, i don't even have that much right now and i can chain trap, just takes a bit of kiting sometimes.

It really depends on how well you play each tree, and what gear you have available to you right now. It would be better to try them all out to see which one feels good to you.

BM is very versitile and easy to use tree that gives you some really nice bonus' that i personally could never live without, but seeing as there are MM and SV hunters raiding/instancing/PVPing out there, i'm guessing MM and SV have their own little perks as well.

I Love the BM tree, what with the on-command stun and the win button.

I haven't played around with survival much since BC, but before that, I had a good time with it. It takes a little more subtlety than BM or MM to make it really good IMO.

I was chain-trapping just fine, but I was in a couple groups that wiped because my traps were resisted both in heroic Steamvaults and in heroic Ramparts, so I nerfed my ranged DPS in exchange for better CC. I'm ok with the swap, but the more I look at the survival tree, the more I hear its siren call.

I guess my worry is the whole late game talent switch thing. I've run into a number of people, Warriors for example, who switch trees after hitting 70 and don't know how to play that tree at all. Fury warriors turning tank, and acting as CC for one mob in Shattered Halls just doesn't cut it.

Granted tanking is harder than DPS, but I feel like my instance performance would take a hit while I learned how to play my spec, and I don't know if it's worth it.

I think I need to go to sleep. That was longer than I expected >.<

Edit: Here's me for reference

Don't worry about this to much. It is not that big switch from BM to SV. You still use your bow, your pet, you still spam steady/auto most of the time (though you'll want to add a arcane or multi now and then).
The only thing that will changes is that you now can do some things better (traps, less mana consumption, expose weakness) while other thing will be weaker (mainly your pet and of course you'll fire your shots at a slower pace).
With a SV spec controlling your pet will not be as important as before, but it'll be still one of your main concerns (as it is still a great source of dps).

After a glance on your gear I'd recommend you just try it. Hell it only costs a few gold. You might want to replace some of your items with some that have agility on them, but overall it should be ok for testing a SV spec.

The only thing which I do not like about my SV spec very much is that killing mobs solo is a lot harder than with a MM or BM spec. The pet is not as robust and cannot hold aggro as good as a BM pet and my damage is not very constant due to some crit-series. Whenever I do more than just autoshot my pet cannot hold aggro very good so killing stuff with many hit points involves a lot of kiting :-)
In instances however (especially in raids) I really like my spec and would not change it for any other spec atm.
Here you can find my toon.
