Protection and 2Handed WeaponsFollow

I know that having the sword and board for protection is a huge part of that spec. But is there anyone that has info, advice, criticisms about using 2 handers as a Prot spec? Is a 2 hander a totally taboo thing for a prot pallie to use or maybe good for grinding. I understand that S&B are a must for instances.

From playing on my alt pally I think the Shield blocking and shield spike are essential for grinding. That additional damage really adds up.

The main thing about prot spec is the damage dealt to the mob when the mob strikes the shield. This goes for instances, and aoe grinding. Using a two-handed sword as protection does about as much good as a holy paladin using a 2h

Indeed. I tried it for a bit while I was in the 45ish range, but it really wasn't good enough. The occasional Reckoning procs will feel good but your overall damage output will suffer greatly.

There is a novelty build (or some variations of it) which includes both SoC and reckoning. I'm sure this could put out some potentially devastating damage in short bursts...but overall novelty builds are just cool but not all that practical (i.e. the warrior who put at least 15 points into each tree to have these ginormous bursts of damage stunning a target and then slamming like crazy).

Honestly it doesnt pay off until much later. I remember soloing the Tyr's hand part of my epic mount quest. I ran into the chapel and went to the room. After I raised there were 3 casters. They made quick work of my shield and I. After the second raise I used my [wowitem=24461]Hatebringer[/wowitem] and smashed their faces in fast. To use it you really need SoC, so it works for builds that already have some ret for parry and benediction. Although keep in mind, it isn't for everyone and its not a cure all for those seeking fast dps.

Just my opinion but full prot spec paladins are at their best with a one hander and shield + spike. I'm a newbie but i've managed to level my pally from 1 to 52 fully protection. The point of being protection spec is to survive and outlast. One on one fights I've been taking on elites 2 levels higher than me and finishing with half health and mana. For normal mobs I've been pulling 5-7 monsters my level or 1-2 levels higher and surviving. Reckoning + Blessing of sanctuary + seal of light does the trick.

Of course any spellcasting mob will ruin my day. So for me at least, I will stick to my protection spec paladin as I enjoy AOE grinding and it allows me to practice tanking in instances as well. But I am just pathetic with a 2 handed weapon.

Normally I would agree, but the shield is there for reducing incoming damage. It can also add to outgoing, but against a caster it does neither. If they are casting there are not blocks, thus no reduction and no extra damage. That is about the only place in which a 2 hander is useful.
