Go for the Voidwalker? WTF?!Follow

#1 Nov 01 2007 at 6:29 AM Rating: Decent
I have no idea if this is just on my server, but if I encounter an Alli (I play horde), they seem to go for my pet first, even when it's my Voidwalker. Hunters are particularly bad for this in my experience (not to offend hunters). Most of the time, I walk away at full hp without healing in these cases. Can anyone explain why they go for the pet first, expecially why the VW?

Cause they are retarded? What level are you/they? maybe they just don't know any better yet.

One word: Sacrifice.

Now allow me to expound using a fairly recent dual.

A rogue about the same level as my lock (then around 40 or so) wanted to test his skills so I agreed to dual. Normally, I don't dual - especially in the middle of STV.

Anywho. Dual begins. He stealths. He creeps. I had VW out already and just left him out. He sneaks up on me, saps! Stunned, I sac the VW while he futilely whacks at my shield. Sap wears off - dot, dot, dot, fear, shadow bolt, fear, drain life. Dead rogue.

Granted - I was at like 15% health or less, and my DoTs are what did him in because I'm Affliction. However, what it boils down to is that Sac makes the VW useful. If a rogue doesn't gack you in one hit with the VW out you stand a good chance of destroying him.

I've done this some thing in the 20 - 29 bracket of BG also.

I believe the OP was wondering why the attacker tried to kill his VW, not why the OP should have a VW out in the first place.

The answer is that there is no good reason. Perhaps the allies you've run into just don't understand lock minions. I could see killing the succy, b/c of seduce, her spell dmg buff, and the fact that she is damn easy to kill. But the VW does minimal dmg and has a fair amount of hp. No way you'll beat him down before the DoTs take care of you.

Again, Sacrafice. In other words they hope (in vain, unless they are idiots) to kill your VW before you can sac him.

The reason I kill a pet first is that it requires another soul shard to summon a new one. Its also good to know that for the next 10 seconds warlocks are going to be summoning their pet again.

If you kill them, they lose the soulshard anyway. And if they are under attack, they will not waste ten whole seconds plus interrupts trying to summon a demon again.

Only a lock with Fel Dom and master summoner will summon a new demon during the battle.

Oh I am a mage and have I can never kill a warlock so thats not my goal. My goal is to cause as much as an inconvenience for them as possible. Them needing another soul shard, and after the battle having to wait 10 seconds to summon a new minion.

Thats probably why people kill the pets first, to cause as much inconvenience as possible.

In BGs, if I'm guarding - a hunter can do /target MyName and send his pet in to harrass me - and he sometimes doesn't even show up for the party. Or the pet can go up the cliff, but he can't.

That's about the only time I kill a pet.

I've noticed people attacking my pets, too. It's weird. Confused players? People who aren't thinking? Newbies to bg?

I'm just glad that they do it. Helps me win!

Most of their pets die within seconds, especially when there are others killing them too. Sure we may kill the warlock, but it sure is fun killing the pet first. And after a certain number of pets death the warlock still ends up having to summon another one if they are in a bg.

It may not be the smartest way to go, but I along with many other people kill the pets first.

Its kind of the same reason why I kill hunters pets too.

Sacrifice is obviously the biggest benefit against another player, especially a hunter. Demonology, imo, is the only spec this would completely ***** over. Personally, I have never dueled with anything but my imp, generally because I've always done my lock duels while waiting for an instance run.

Battlegrounds are a completely different story. A warlock immediately has a bullseye over his/her head, especially in Alterac Valley, when the locks will have felguards, unstable affliction, howl of terror, death coil and any number of other nasty spells they might have (and seed of corruption at the 70 battlegrounds). That said, the hunters in battlegrounds are generally BM or MM spec, and sometimes will team up to use Silencing Shot and Bestial Wrath in conjunction with each other in order to ensure that the lock is dead before it has a chance to do much of anything. (Myself, I consider my job done if I can use instant Howl in the middle of a group and send them scattering while the tanks destroy what's left over the next 8 seconds.)

As per duels, there's generally an easy way around the pet thing anyway, depending on your level. Death coil immediately will give you enough time to cast fear (2 sec for death coil, 1.5 sec cast Fear), then dot dot dot (and dot again if you can get out UA and/or Immolate as well). Howl of Terror if need be, then Fear again and drain. Easily slaughtered rogues and druids this way, ime (unless, of course, undead anything, but that's a different story).

Warriors and feral druids will attack your pet simply for rage generation, while you're out of range - usually one or two hits before coming at you again (intercept).

Otherwise, it's the same as killing a hunter's pet - it's a way of showing absolute disrespect for that player ("haha, I can kill your pet before even fighting you, and still win").

Keep going after my pet, please. You're dead.

Iam a lvl 62 lock, and I’ve always sent my V.W after the pet first..It throws the player off and they start attacking the V.W..to try and save they're pet...while I DoT, DoT, DoT, them and before they know it they’re dead and wondering ...what just happened?? So I guess they're just trying to do the same thing.

Maybe because 90% of all Warlocks that PvP are SL/SL and their pet is a big part of them and killing them not only makes it "annoying" for the warlock, but you are much more efficient in killing the warlock itself. If it's a Voidwalker the warlock generally gets 10% damage mitigation which is 30% mitigation in total when combined with Soul link. So killing the pet basically is making you do 30% more damage to the warlock.

2000 + arena rating and I kill the pet anytime it is sent in unattended. When setting up for a 5v5 rush sometimes the warlock sends it in just because “we won’t kill it”. It usual goes down very fast and the warrior builds some rage. It also hurts the lock to some degree, If you kill his fellguard you get kited less or some other benefit. And the succubus dies if I breath on it, or I could let it seduce a party member over and over : /

In world PVP, if your Voidwalker is tanking mobs for you, it makes sense for a ganker to kill it first so that the mobs then come after the 'lock.

I totally disagree!
I think im a total noob on my lock (though most of my work on her has been solo questing/run through elite quests/instances) and i have over 40 soul shards (finally got the number down from 54, just kept pumping out the soul shards cause I wasn't expecting to really play her again, but for some reason my interest got perked again)
